Grinding 5th gear with 20k miles??

So I have taken my car to the track twice and only launched it a few times but my clutch is starting to feel softer and my tranny grinds 5th unless I let the rpms drop down before trying to go in. Why is the world does a car with 20k miles have problems with a grinding 5th gear. I have owned the car since it had 10,8xx miles and didn't have these problems. It started grinding 5th one night after I downshifted into 2nd and my foot slipped or I didn't give it enough gas and it jolted pretty bad. I wasn't going too too fast...bout 40 mph. Is it grinding 5th because of a worn out clutch possibly? And can I take it to the dealership and get them to fix this problem? Thanks.

i've had the same problum, my gears started grinding around 25,000 miles first it was 5th then 3rd started acting up around 50,000 miles. Like you said, it does not grind when i let the rpms drop before shifting. The dealer told me it may be my syncros and so have many other places. im still on my factory clutch though at 56,000 miles so maybe thats the reason. Never launched my car once.

Yeah man my 3rd has been feeling notchy lately. I always let the car warm up for about 5 min in the winter and it has started to become notchy in almost every gear. I'm sure it's time for a fluid change. I'm still on the stock clutch as well. I'm wanting to do a shep trans as soon as I can though. That will solve any problems I have. And I'll be doing a clutch/flywheel at the same time. But that might be a while so that why I'm concerned about the car. Usually bleeding my clutch has helped a lot so I'm prolly gonna try that out and see how it does.

being stock, you shouldn't have a problem getting the dealer to repair under warranty. Most factory reps will warranty this as long as the stock clutch is still in the car.

Replace the tranny fluid since you might have some shavings in it and if that doesn't work it is very well your synchro. I had the same problem as you and it was my synchros. Just stop by at the dealership and tell them your fifth gear started grinding. DON'T TELL THEM YOU WENT TO THE TRACK!

Your problem seems to be you to change the fulids if not it's your 5th gear syncro and everyone says that the 5spd trannies are strong that's bull crap just depends on how your treat it,you said that you but your car used with 10k on it so the other owner probably beat lanched it and drove it hard that's why i hate buying used cars.

Oh I'm not an idiot lol I would never tell them I race the car or anything! I really do drive this car very easy. I take care of my cars and that's why this aggravates the **** out of me! So I think I'm gonna get down to a Mitsu dealer ASAP and tell them about my problem. I do still have the stock clutch so the warranty should apply with my car. If they do tell me that they will do the warranty work will I have to put out any money? Might be a dumb question but I've never had this new of a car with a factory warranty.

No you will not have to spend any money. That is why we have warrantys. lol Everything should go smoothly. Just get a rental for a couple of days and write down the mileage when you leave your car there just in case someone tries to go for a joy ride.
