looks more of an 8 to me, even a little peak of the intercooler hints that to me, I would agree with DocCola...

Im quite surprised no one else thought of this but, Maybe the old own swapped out the valve cover for an Evo IX Valve Cover? That is an Evo VIII SPARK PLUG COVER (The thing that says mitsubishi) And the Mivec Turbo is the Valve Cover off of an Evo IX.. At this point the only way you will be sure is from the VIN.
