How to decode VIN

Well I am about to pick up my first evo in the next few months. I haven't picked one up due to just wanting to shop for the right one. I don't want to rush out. This is my first real stock car that I will be purchasing. I have had an integra on spray, and a NA ek9 that ran 13s which was pretty fast for a honda. But comfort wise it sucked.

So now that im shopping for a car, ive read a few tutorials on how to tell differences of the evo 8 and 9's. I want to purchase a white, or gray 2006 MR but most of the listings on Autotrader, and other car websites are not very telling. And when you call the salesperson they can barely tell you what it is.

But I know that you can decode the vin to tell you if its an MR or not. I know to look for the BBS rims, the generator, and the middle decal on the center console where there shifer is when i look at the images.

So in my search for the perfect MR, is there any way you can decode the vin liek is there a specific number in there that shows you that its an MR? other then the subtle differences.

Other then the rims, vortex generator, (BTW no one on autotrader lists it as a 6speed though some of the ads, say MR but thats liek 1 or 2 out of like 50 postings.) And the middle decal that say: Lancer Evolution MR near the ALUMINUM shift knob. Though some pics show different.

liek this ad for instance, i even called them and they told me its an MR:

http://www.autotrader.com/fyc/vdp.js...standard=false

Noticve no center bandge and the leather shift knob

No shark fins

No bbs rims

So this is obviously not an MR, but the salesguy even hung up and said hed check for me, and eh called back saying it is. So im really confused.

Any help would be appreciated.

The VIN decoder says its supposed to be a 6 speed.

http://www.motoverse.com/tools/vinDe...AH86C16U041752

I guess they could just be lying about the VIN not like its happened before :P.

Maybe Mitsubishi doesn't have a special trim code for an MR just the 6 speed option. It is just a website after all I think it would be best to get a real in person look at the car and scan over the badges on the door jam and so forth. If it really was a MR there should be a spot saying it.

Doesn't look like an MR to me at all.
It has a leather shift knob, emergency brake would be CF+alum, No BBS rims,
No Vortex Generator/ and shifter console is wrong,MR is square where the boot is / and it doesn't have the boost guage package /etc..

I doubt someone would put the 5 spd in and then go to all the trouble of changing everything to look like a GSR.
Did you look and see if it has the HD Bilstein shocks.. they are yellow with blue Bilstein stickers.

I think they have the vin wrong or something shady is going on there..

edit:
And if you look at the switches on the left side dash, It doesn't have the Headlight leveler switch or the fog light switch.
The blank plates are there, but no switches.

Mitsubishi does in fact make an OE 6-Speed Leather Shift Knob.

...just thought I would throw that out there since that is being made a point

Im not saying its an MR though. Actually, why dont I run the vin through Mitsubishi's database.

So with the above autocheck your telling me that its an EVO MR?

Also no they didnt change the ad.

The ad never said it was an MR and i told my brother who is in AZ that its not an MR, but he said he'll call and ask for me. So when he called me back he said the car is sold but they noted that the techie there said it was an MR. But from the pictures i told him that its not way its an MR.

And when i checked the vin, it said it was an MR.

From the looks of it that is not an MR. If it was originally some parts have been stripped. That car isnt stock either. I see a larger FMIC tucked behind that bumper.
