Can't decide what to do!!

Hello Evom members!

I just purchased an 06 MR and truly loving it. The previous owner had hks exhaust, kn filter and an alpine head unit put in. I read till my eyes hurt on this forum to see what I should do. After all the research, and speaking to AMSTUNING, I am thinking to do a downpipe, boost controller, fuelpump, tune. I thought about switching from KN to the hks racing suction system as well. I was told this would be the optimum choice for first step tuning.

My worries & concerns.
1. Other advice said fuel pump upgrade may not be necessary. Also failure rates of the current walbro and loud whines.
2. Long term damage to engine due to aftermarket mods. If the trade off for getting more power by a stage 1 type setup is losing long engine life I'm not too excited. BUt if someone here can tell me they've broken 100k miles after bolting on in their 20k days then I'll feel much better.
3. Modification order- What steps should be taken to ensure the car has a solid foundation before turning up any boost or pushing the car after a tune.

Any advice is appreciated. I did read around and searched but these questions were a bit specific to find. Thanks guys

Insolate the fuel pump may help with sound deadening and I deff woudlnt worry about failure rates. Also for 120 bux i'd get it now so you don't have to budget it for a big upgrade later.

I never had 100k miles on it but 1 week after I bought my car brand new I had AMS stages 1 and 2 on my car.... Few weeks later, stage 3 then 1 year later put a 50 trim turbo on it, then 4 months after that a stroker motor.. All the while driving it hard but I had a really good tune and really took care of the car.

I had my car for 50k miles and my car ran strong!!

It's all about the TUNE and how you drive it and take care of it.

If you beat the living **** out of it day in and day out and could care less about it, then yes the car will break down on ya.

You are doing anything major yet such as a turbo or stroker motor...

I would do the fuel pump, I would add ARP head studs and if its readily available in your area, I would consider running E85 but then you will need much bigger injectors to the mix.

Thanks for the peace of mind. I will make sure to get the essentials and a tune. I hope to get a long life from the car. Currently it pulls but not neckbending enough to where i need it. Surely 70 or so more hp would do it. I assume warranty is out the window? How about the intake previous owner had? Should i go with hks racing suction or will that make idle erratic? Thanks again guys

you'll be fine. just get safe tune. Yes warranty will get void but who wants to take the car to Dealer anyways, do diaqueen oil for tc/rear diff every 15k-20k miles, change oil every 3k miles. with fully synth mobil 1 10w30/and oem filter. Im 92k on mine. never had a single problem, my wheel bearings gave up so i had to change them.

109k miles with full bolt-ons and meth, 30 psi. Many track days on the car, the tune is the key!

AMS tuning in MD or Chicago?

Stay away from AMS in MD, every person I have known who has went there has had nothing but negative things to say about the service and the worksmanship.

I figured mitsu warranties are shams anyway. It is simply too much hassle. If my goal is 340whp cant stock ix fuel pump support this? Are you all getting mpg below 20 after these mods? I believe thats all my concerns. Also, anybody running fine witha mbc and not electronic? Thanks

I bought the hks racing suction as my first mod on an otherwise stock 06mr. It idled and ran great then... I still have it W/ supporting mods pushing 360 whp and its still fantastic...

Thanx guys. Great feedback!

Borie, id like to get your kind of setup. Perfect hp.
Dream, who else can tune in dc/md area if not ams? I was quoted 1k for pump, mbc, downpipe, tune.
Thanks

I actually work in chantilly. That is convenient. Ill give them a call. Im glad this thread has helped out a lot. So with 350 hp or so have any of you felt any losses in handling cornering speed or overall driveability. I guess im saying with additional hp does it warrant to
Get engine mounts stiffening etc? Isnt the fq400 an evo9 with bolt ons? Thanx
