Question Help! Buying Evo but deposit question?

Hey EvoM, I've recently joined EvoM and have been on the search for an Evo 9 MR. I just found one today and agreed on a price. The seller is out of state in California and I won't be able to make it until after the July 4th weekend because we are both busy. He asked if I could mail a deposit, so my question is how safe is that? Are there such things as refundable despoits just in case for some reason I choose not to buy the car. I'm pretty sure I'm going to buy it but what wording should be in the contract. Also usually how much do people usually deposit?

Sorry for the million questions but I am really excited to find my dream car so fast. I just don't want to be out my deposit when I find he sold the car. Thanks!

I would never mail deposit, Only use paypal backed by a creditcard so you can stop the transaction if need be.

This sounds fishy to me so beware!!!

Where is the car listed for sale at? Have you talked to the owner personally?

Usally when I sell a car I will ask for a 500.00 non refundable deposit so that way the buyer is going to show for sure and if he dosent I can keep the deposit for my effort and possible missed sale so anything more than 500.00 is to much in my opinion.

A deposit is usally just a show of good faith.

I found the car off craigslist, it has records of everything and is 1 owner. It has low miles and not modded. So the deposit is only suggested because he wants to take it off the market but being a seller he wants to assure I will come down. Since it won't be for another 2-3 weeks a deposit does sound fair but if I paid for a deposit over paypal how would I label it as a deposit? Should I make a contract for him to sign first and then have him fax it back to me before I send it over Paypal?

contracts are bull****, million and a half ways to get around them..

either you trust him enough to send him about 500 dollars that you're 100% willing to lose (in both chances that either, he steals it, or you don't buy the car [if its non refundable])

or you don't and try and talk him into saving you the car either way..

..or find another car lol

haha yeah I figured most likely I'm going to have to trust him. I figured it would not hurt to have a contract of some sort to show payment and have a little protection on it. As far as finding a new car, this one is exactly what I've been looking for! 1 Owner, Dealer maintained 06 MR, 20k Miles, Unmodded with Factory Warranty still!

Also BTW, thanks for the responses! I didn't expect such quick responses at this time of the night.

sounds like a scam, if you're in washington and he's in california, why did he post the evo for sale in a diff state? send a deposit if you want to lose that $

paste your emails in here so we can check it, obviously any address or personal info, black it out.
