low post newb looking for advice on this car..

Hi there

I have been lurking for years, and am finally looking to get an EVO. I found the following car, and am curious what y'all think of it.

http://sacramento.craigslist.org/ctd/1328486651.html

It has high miles for an 2006. The car fax reads it has had 4 owners, all of which had the car repossesed. no other reports 'cept a failed smog test a year ago. It has passed cali smog recently, and is fairly clean. the motor copmpartment is STOCK, and the radiator has no marks on it. there looks to have been a small dent near the lft rear turn sig, but has been touched up. it looks very minor in person, and everything around it is clean/ including inside the trunk.

i have not driven it, but have started it and crawled around it. it has tein springs, some guages, and a cat back. no clue on tune, the dealer got it at auction.

my concerns

87k miles on an 06
a noise is coming from the pulley area, seemd like a lower pulley. it was cyclical with engine speed
the rear dent

otherwise the interior and everything else is pretty much an 8 or 9/10. the car is attractive to me due to the 2006 model year vs 03-04, and the updated motor in 06, ayc, etc.

so am i a numscal for even thinking about it? i do all my own work, and can pretty much do it all (motor swapps, clutch, etc).

thanks for any help here.

josh

ps i come from a heavy subaru background, having owned 2 rs's(one swapped) an sti, and 2 wrx wagons.

this car was probably modded a lot more... usually evo 8 tails on a 9 are a sign off this... the owner had evo 7 tails , exhaust (failed smog test), etc and probably parted the car out in a hurry, it was repossessed by the bank and now this company buys it at auction... i would be careful

edit... just read you do all your own work. If you are decent around the engine bay it might not be a bad deal. You might want to ask the company for a compression test. Did you look in the oil cap? Pull the dipstick? Look at the exhaust manifold bolts/studs and see if they have been wrenched on... look at the 02 sensor and see if it has been removed etc

They couldn't afford to make payments.....who knows what else they couldn't afford to do on the car.... Only get this if you are a competent mechanic...or are good friends with one. Either way, price is high for this passed around potato.

Drive it and decide. If you can do your own work, you should have the skill set to do a inspection of the vehicle.

After the test drive decide if it is a good deal. I would guess the car has been modded and parted out like others suggested.

thanks all!

i am going to have an indepedant mech look at it and do a comp test. i am also thinking about a body shop check it out as well.

this was tyh input i was looking for. i feel the same way: a bit sceptical, but if the inspections come out ok, i probably will give it a shot.

thanks again!

josh

ps the springs would def be gone immediatly. i live in the mountains and the upsidown arm angle would be a night mare around here. i would probably go to an MR set up or a set of decent co's. plans right now if /when i get an EVO = 18x9.5 w/255's, exhaust/intake, tune, and MAYBE cams. it is going to be a daily driver in the harsh winters of the Tahoe area, so it will be rallied out a bit for winter. evo 7 front bumper, studlesss, etc.

if its stored for 5 years, the shocks may have problems from sitting so long

When I was a kid I bought an `80 Mustang in mint condition, literally owned by a little old lady. Was one of the worst buys in my life...I ended up replacing almost everything on that car including rebuilding the motor. If cars aren't properly stored then they only look nice...
