AMS TBE Need Advice..

Hey fellas,

Just installed my new AMS TBE 3inch w/ test pipe. The exhaust sounds amazing.. I had a catback greddy evo2 that I switched from. Do I need a tune asap or is it safe to run without a tune. This is the only mod currently done. I have searched and havnt been able to find a post that fully answers this question, of course I know a tune is always the best way to go but am I safe without a tune for the time being? Thanks in advance!

Yes I would suggest getting a tune. My car with a TBE and no tune would hit fuel cut at WOT.

I should add that you are safe to drive, just don't go whaling on the car without a tune.

+1

Though, I don't think you are going to blow your motor or anything , you just won't get the most power/efficiency until you've had it retuned.

Yeah, you are fine without a tune but like stated above, you are not going to get the full potential out of your car. Just send your ecu into ams if your not planning on getting any other mods for awhile.

Just like everyone said, you won't be getting the full potential from the parts without a tune. But running a TBE with a test pipe will not hurt the car at all. It may even free up a pound or two of boost, which is still perfectly fine.

If possible, try to log your car.. Because if its knocking, then you know your car isn't running right. I ran basic bolt-ons without a flash for a little bit, but the car wasn't knocking at all.. It just wasn't maximizing the potential from all the parts.

I'd look for a dyno tune a little closer to home, if I were you. A long-distance tune is always going to be generic. A quick Google search came up with Surgeline Tuning in Portland. I'm sure there are other places if you look around.

What mods are you going for? An ECU flash is more than enough for basic bolt-ons.. Even aftermarket turbos like the BBK and the FP's. Not very many people here use aftermarket engine management units, well at least for the Evo. Many 400+ WHP cars here still using ECU flashes. Just a thought when thinking about buying an engine management unit.

I called Surgeline yesterday and they said they can program my stock ECU, which i'm guessing is the same thing as the flash. The only mod I have currently is the TBE, which I love the sound of the AMS and it fits perfect. Although just got the check engine light on yesterday after about 100miles with the exhaust on.. Guess ill have to get a cell eliminator.

Yeah, everybody ends up needing them. I have one that I'll be installing on Saturday.

Tunes are the best bang for the buck...they usually pick up 40hp and improve spool. A full exhaust without a tune is only 20hp or so. I love the sound that my car makes but it's more noise than power right now. I'll be getting tuned as soon as I get the downpipe on. I'm fortunate to have 3 performance shops in town that do tuning.

I was using an anti fouler that came with greddy my exhaust. I soon ditched the anti fouler and just deleted the rear o2 all together.
