Buying an Evo

Hey guys, i am planning on getting my own car this spring. At first i was very interested in the Zs, but its unappealing seeing one every corner. So i have been looking around and i don't think i can get a better car around the 30k range than the Evo.

I know you guys probably wouldn't recomend it as a first car especially for an 18 year old. ( obvious reasons ) Although, I am going to be able to afford only one car until i probably get out of college. So i want something that is going to satisfy me for a long time. Right now I'm driving a 2000 malibu and whenever my brother is feeling nice, his 06 rsx type S.

So a couple of questions:
How do you guys think that the insurance is going to compare with other cars, like the 350z for example. The Evo is a four door, but it does have the turbo so i have no idea how the insurance company is going to judge it. My insurance record is clean btw, no tickets or anything like that. Also, the car is going to be on my dad as a primary driver, not me.

Second, Would you guys recommend it as a primary car ? Like i said, this is going to be my primary car and it will be in use pretty much everyday.

Third, Do you guys think that there is going to be a noticeable price drop for the 08 Evo X's in the spring as apposed to their prices now.

Fourth, Is there a such a huge gap between the GSR and the MR ? If there is, i wouldn't mind throwing in the extra couple of g's.

Any other comments or tips would be appreciated.

Thanks

Well imma start off and say insurance will probably eat ur *** up... especially if its in your name and as u say its gonna be in your dads name so it may not be so bad. Other than that I say go for it. As long as u take care of it it will always be there with you. Just get ready to have a heck of a payment. but gl in your buy.

GSR VS MR, MANUAL VS AUTO, few other things that actually make a big difference, besides mod-ability, the gsr is the way to go if you want to mod.

I bought mine when I was 18, tell you the truth dude, the payments suck, they are NO fun. If someone else is buying the car for you, more power to you, but if your getting it yourself, have fun.

Well, anyone right now financing that can tell me how much their payment is and how many years.

I went to the Mercedes dealership, and they had the 09 c300 down to 31k i think. After calculating the payments, it was around 350 ( im guesstimating ) a month. I am trying to get the Evo around this price. You think ill get any luck ? The X's go for around 33 k here i think.

yeah my parents are paying for it, except im putting down a down payment of like 5 grand.

na bro I think it will be a good bit more than 350 a month. It just depends on your credit but I dont think I see anyone getting 31 grand for 350 a month unless u finance for like 8 years and if im wrong someone correct me but I believe u can only finance a vehicle for 6 years. For six years not counting finance charges ur payment would be around 500 or 550

well if the car is under your parents name and so is the insurance, your bill will be significantly less. If you can still get 08s, get them. other wise 10's will be way more than 33k, dealer where I got my car from is selling 2010 for 40k+. good luck

I have an 08 with 0% and it's $520/mo for 60 mos(5yrs) with 0 down...good luck on $350. It's not hard to calculate your payment, make yourself an excel spreadsheet and run the numbers before you jump into anything. As ►EvolutionX◄ said, the payments are no fun. Don't forget the maintenance costs as well, new set of (pricey) tires every 10-15k miles, poor gas mileage on premium gas, maybe a new clutch, etc. I don't meant to discourage you, it's a blast but make sure you know what you're getting yourself into.
I'm in college right now and I hate having this kind of expense looming over me, but I graduate in May. I don't know if I could do it for 4+ years.

PS my insurance is $800/6mo with my father as primary, clean record, I'm 21. Call your insurance agent though and get a price quote from them, that's the only way to know. It'll take 5 minutes.

Let me tell you....First thing is you gotta have a good steady job, because I have been in a situation with my evo where making that huge payment a month, plus the huge insurance payment kicked my a**.

Umm as for your questions, Maybe you like the X's, but an 8 or a 9 is a blast to drive and you can find them often for bargain prices..ie 16k and up. They will be used but all you have to do is get a mechanic to check it out....a good mechanic.

You also gotta factor in like what everyone else has been talking about...Maintenance!! Do you plan on getting aftermarket parts??? Of course you do, its an EVO...it only takes a couple months for you to start wanting a little more. I think Evo's with up to 450 are good for daily drivers. Thats my personal opinion...im running 440 and I have a blast! Only problem is stuff starts to wear down and all the sudden you find yourself having to buy a T-case and Clutch all at the same time.

Dont let this discourage you because i wouldnt trade my evo for anything in the world, but it is a b**** sometimes LOL. Good luck man!

Well the GSR vs. MR decision should be easy. If you want a 5 spd manual, buy GSR. If you want an auto, buy MR. MR is more expensive, and transmission cannot hold as much power stock as the GSR's manual can without major upgrades. Insurance wise, I bet it will be hefty given your age.

My insurance only went up like $23/mo when i traded my cobalt ss/sc in for my evoX, but i was 23 when i did so. I still pay 225ish a month with a clean record, household discounts, full coverage, etc.

As far as the evo being a good choice for a primary car, I don't see why not. My X is my daily driver, and i've put about 12k miles on it so far commuting from work, with 1 track day, and one few hundred mile road trip. I can't say I have any complaints using it as my only car. The thing i love the most about having an evo as a daily driver, is no matter what the weather is like, it's fun. i haven't driven it in the snow yet, but with the right tires and the awd, i have no fears that it wont impress me. i used to be mad when i woke up and it was raining when i owned my cobalt...since with 270whp, i got no traction whatsoever. that's not so much of an issue in the evo. now i play a game in the rain called "let's see if i can break all 4 loose going around a corner." it's great fun.

I only have 16k miles on mine and I've done tires and just about ready to change brake pads. That's a cool G right there..just one year on a new car that isn't even broken yet. Can you afford $500+ maintenance on top of the car payment?

Do this keep the car u have start saving. go to college keep saving. Get a good job than spend the money u saved on the car u want. Right now i would say u can't afford one. Pricey to insure, maintain, gas, mods, it all ads up. Than u might have a ok car but can't afford to go out in it. Or hang with friends. Its just a car.
