Intake and Exhaust Manifolds

Assuming that most intake and exhaust manifolds aren't going to be terribly different from each other in terms of performance, will adding these two parts be beneficial in terms of performance?
i.e., more power, quicker spool etc? Considering in terms of a full bolt on evo with stock turbo, with bbk full, and fp red, will the gains increase more among the turbos?

What exactly are the benefits, and do most people find these upgrades to be worth it? They are probably a must have for cars running huge turbos and trying to make big power, but how about for those of us wanting to run stock appearing turbos, like those mentioned.

Thanks

It is not necessary to run different manifolds in order to run stout stock turbo cars, but they will help for sure. For instance, the Full Race exhaust manifold and the tubular designs help spool up and low end torque. Also, there is no real need to buy aftermarket manifolds, just port your stock ones an you will also see gains. Not huge, but reasonable...

Porting them will be cheaper, as opposed to dropping a ton of money on those aftermarket equivalents. Especially if your running a stock frame turbo.

Good luck.

thanks - what exactly is done in the process of porting? if i ask a shop to do this for me, do you have a ballpark for how much it'll cost? i would like a quicker spool and more power etc..

I hope that I can help a little bit with my own testimony. These are my facts,

1995 Eclipse GSX with 7 Bolt 4G63 and 94000 miles on the odometer. Car had the following mods before swaping the intake manifold:

Methanol,FP3052 Turbokit@24psi,DNPexhaust manifold,MBC,680cc injectors,3"TB,Evo8IC,,FPcams and a couple of minor other parts

I only swapped the intake manifold for a JMF intake maniold(race version). With no other modifications this is what I gained:

1) 20whp to all 4 wheel on a mustang dyno(above 6000rpm)
2) 26lb-tq (above 6000 rpm)
3) Spool-up enhanced by 250rpms
4) Boost went up 1psi from 24psi to 25psi
5) overall gains of torque and hp of no less than 12whp-15lbtq at any given rpms

There was absolutely no loses at any rpm power band, there were no loses on spool or loses on max boost, the other way around, every single aspect of the performance was enhanced vastly. I never even retuned the car for the manifold, these were all gains.

My test was done at IAPERFORMANCE and I exclusively paid for a before and after dyno. Had I retune the car and I would probably gained a few extra hp as well but I was very very happy with the results. My manifold cost me $450 new so I couldn't complaint.

Dynosheet on hand for the non believers. By the way, sorry I did not have a specific intake manifold testimony for the Evo but being my 2G DSM you can get an idea of the gains.

Carlos

Go to Map Performances website and look through the intake and exhaust stuff and they have pics of there work. Bob is a freakin wizard when it comes to port and polish I'd start there.

Impressive, thanks for the great info! Those are some great gains.. Unfortunately, the intakes for the evo that I'm looking at are a bit more expensive - AMS F1-I, but if the gains are anywhere near what they are here it'll definitely be worth it.

Do you think something similar can be found for getting an exhaust manifold as well?
