Buying first evo

Good day to all...Just wondering if it would be smart to go with a newer evo like a 9 with less miles with not as many mods or to buy an 8 with a little more miles but has a good amount of mods...im torn between the 2. I feel as if I got a 9, I could do what i want n build it myself but the thought of not having to spend money with everything done already tickles my fancy too. Any help is appreciated...Thanks!

just bought mine a month ago and put it onto winter storage after 2 weeks Its a big decision the one you just asked becase of obvious reasons. You almost have to interview the seller asking questions and things and check honesty with the car, with the 8 it may be the best shops doing the work or some guy looking on google on how to in the garage. With the stock evo you can't guarentee that it hasn't been beat on but they are hard to find nowadays. My opinion i'd go with the 9 to be "safe". The evo 9's are damn fast out of the box and you will still have the same smile factor, trust me.

I just got an 8 with a little bit of a list underneath it but: origional owner, all work done by VERY reputable shops, and lots of time and thought went into each part looking for the "perfect mod" I am very happy with mine and it does have some go fast mods but still, it makes me smile before i even get in...

Good luck and happy buying but DO YOUR RESEARCH ON THE CAR! my .02. I researched for a year before I picked.

Personally I wouldn't buy a used modded car... Even if the installs were done at a reputable shop. There's no telling how hard the car was bagged on. I'd go with a stock 9 with low miles just because it's newer and I like the look of the front end better. Look it over top of bottom, and do your research. Good luck.

I would say get a modded 8 if you plan on modding. That stuff gets expensive. Not everyone abuses their car. There are plenty of people on this board with 350whp cars that have never raced it or even launched.

Trying to save a few bucks on a purchase of an Evo amounts to a false economy, as it'll cost more to get the thing running to spec. If you have no way of knowing who owned the car, how it was used, exactly what was done to it, where and by whom, and no Evo-specific shop to look the car over, I'd pass. If you look for a car in the classifieds on this site, at the very least you have an opportunity to look over the seller's past threads/posts and get an idea as to the car's usage. Try it. The findings can be astonishing. Good luck.

I personally like evo 8s over 9. You can get a 8 cheaper for sure. The thing is this there is really no such thing as a stocker 8 or 9 im sure some type of mod was on the car before not to mention people fail to realize there are alot of evo 8 and 9s that were returned to stock. So they sell it as stock and leave maybe a exhaust on with some gauges etc so you have to watch out for that as well the tell tell signs. Buying a car that is already modded is a hit or a miss even off this forum. i seen people buying modded cars and be happy everything is with the up and up and they ended up saving tons of money that they would have spent anyways then i seen some modded evos that were sold as good but had major issues with oil leaks bolts missing tranny missing gears etc. Again you really have to test drive the car then take it to a shop or the Dealer and have them do a FULL inspection thats the key. Im not going to lie with mine i did none of that and got lucky it had some minor issues but i correct them all as i found them. Make sure you have like 2000 saved up after you get it for repairs if any fuild changes maybe a new clutch you never know with these things. Also just because its a 9 does not make it better get tired of hearing such nonsense on this site. There are plenty of low mileaged evo 8s if you look around. Yes you might upgrade the turbo anyways and cams so who cares thats what you buy evo for to make it your own and have fun doing it

A Evo is a Evo. So if your trying to save money then buy the 8 with the mods.

that does not matter once you add cams to the 8 not to mention again you can always upgrade the turbo to a 9 or better Fp sells the install kit and still save more money then buying a 9 in the long run

MIVEC still makes a difference, as do the additional cooling passages allowing the car to run more boost with less stress. I cannot imagine a reason, outside of cost and/or the prospect of building a racecar, why one would choose a VIII over a IX.

I think what you mention helps the top end, but the MIVEC is nice to have when you are not boosting - makes the car more driveable.

Why would someone build a car to 350 whp and never even launch it?
