quick question(s) on exhaust setup

so i plan on an exhaust, and i realize...i want loud...not ricey civic high pitch break windows loud...but a really loud rumble like a tricked out Camaro SS u know wut i mean? i obviously wont get a loud v8 rumble outta my 2.0...but i want loud.

i was thinking 2 1/2" piping...cuz i 'plan' to go turbo...just like almost everyone else lol. but im not sure how my car would run if i have just like only the SRI and 2.5" piping....i plan on test pipe also..and headers(unless it will make me fail emissions testing here in southern IL, which prolly would)

so...say i have an SRI, Test Pipe...and 2.5" piping from the Test-Pipe back....wut kind of muffler would be best? lookin for a decent sound..not like a bumble bee can...although with 2.5" piping im sure it will sound like that regardless..is 2.5" piping bad for an NA motor...keep in mind i dont plan on turbo for a year or 2....if they still make em by than but a long post will now end...

so...2 1/2" piping or 2 1/4" and wut kinda muffler(i will get SRI and TEST PIPE also)

thanks for ur opinions etc. etc.

2.5" is overkill... 2.25" should be plenty for a cat back system. Also do a header, that'll really help out with making your exhaust loud.

Yes, 2.5 is overkill even if you're running a turbo with 10 psi. I agree with the suggestion of the Greddy. I've heard it and it's pretty good. Although if you want it really loud, you might want to get an even louder muffler.

after talkin to Lancerozr on AIM.... i think im gonna go with the SRI, Header, Test Pipe, Greddy with the 2 1/4" obviously...but definitly thanks for all the input guys, its awesome.

HEY URBAN a quick QUE since ur the auto-x expert it seems...wut springs would be better handling/performance wise...Progress or the Tein springs(i think i saw somewhere that they make these...)? i got an ES so no eibach or i'd get those....i dont got loads of money so coil-overs outta the question. But wut springs best handling wise...thanks man

well, springs are only going to improve your handling a little, because of the lower center of gravity. Upgrading your shocks will make more of a difference. But if you just want springs for now, I think you should check to see if the Tein springs have a different spring rate, and if it's progressive. Because I think the Progress ones are not much different from stock in spring rate. But other than that, I like the quality control on the Progress springs, No complaints about sag, just clicking noises.

but u gotta remember...i plan on also the Headers and Test Pipe to....so it will be a lot louder and much higher pitched. Thats why i was curious as to 2 1/4 or 2 1/2" piping, and i heard if u go turbo u need bigger piping, but they all seem to agree that 2 1/4" is fine even with a turbo...and since i only plan on running my turbo at like 5-6 psi its not big deal...they said 2 1/4" was fine even at 10 psi.

Also, wut APEX muffler r u running? N1 i heard gives the best performance...but...with that performance...you get the high pitched loud bumble bee sound...commonly referred to as civicy/ricey etc etc.

its always been my understanding that the bigger the piping the lower and more bassy the sound...althought all your backpressure goes to **** and you lose a bunch of torque. there's a thread on here...dont remember what it was called, but a guy was wondering what he should do to his header and catback system to eliminate the whiny rice sound. If memory serves me correctly he's got a kamekazi header, 2.25 catback, testpipe, and i dunno what kinda muffler. The header is what REALLY makes your system loud and everything you add past that just increases the magnitude. Unfortunately, that almost always means a higher pitched sound.
He was even thinking about putting back his cat and taking out the tesetpipe...it would help with emissions too.

yea, i was aware larger piping meant less backpressure meaning loss of torque...but i was worried a bit about backfiring or something horrid like that...i dunno how that really makes it backfire but im sure without enough pressure it would backfire...and it wouldn't be to pretty.

Unfortunately, there aren't many choices for decent shocks for our Lancers. A fellow racer had me sold on getting ground control coilover springs with Koni or KYB shocks, until I found out Koni and KYB don't make shocks for the Lancer... and over a year later they still don't So right now, your only choices for good handling are the Jic coilover kit or the Tein coilover kit (which I am very happy with at the moment). Tokiko is coming out with a better performing shock for us, but it won't give you dempening choices, just stiffer than stock. So if you want true performance, save your pennies. If you just want improved handling, go for the springs and maybe Tokiko shocks down the line.

As for the exhaust, it's true that when you get too large you lose a lot of the torque. Anything larger than 2" will not help you much until you get over 100 mph. So if you like racing down highways, go for 2.5. If you want acceleration, stick with something around 2". Although I wouldn't worry too much, because if you still use the cats, they will limit the flow of the 2.5 anyway. So they all will perform like a 2" exhaust more or less. Someone correct me if I'm wrong. I'm just a suspension guru... kinda

Come to an autocross some time and notice the street cars running fastest are often the quieter ones. Stupid Civic uncapped his exhaust (no cats, no mufflers, no nothin) at an event with no noise limit. He had no power.

i could see how a more restricitive..yet better flowing exhaust would help in autocross...since its mainly turn and hard acceleration...no long straight aways for top end kinda power.

thanks for all the input and help guys, much apperciated(new to the lancer scene still a lil bit...i had a grandam and know everything about the 95 with the 3100 engine in em though lol)
