introduction and questions
introduction and questions
i figured my first post should be an introduction
im not really new to the evo/sti scene but, ive definitely been away from it for a while.
my first car was a 2000 impreza 2.5RS that saw a few bolt-ons from rallitek in portland, or. it wasnt super fast or anything but, i did run into the "better than you" attitudes from a lot of wrx/sti guys that still couldnt hang with me in the corners lol.
a few years later i picked up an 03 evo but, lost my job a week later so the car had to go. missed it ever since!
a few days ago i spotted another 03 that had 141k on it. im not too happy about the milage but i decided to go for it anyway after reading that more than a few of these have hit or come close to 200k miles.
its going to be a fun few weeks ahead to be sure!
im currently in iraq so i had my friend go check the car out for me and buy it since it was in good shape. havent seen it yet so im crossing my fingers and hoping for the best. all ive got is the crappy photo from the add.
they're picking it up today and taking it to surgeline next week for a detailed inspection. depending on what they come up with, i should be starting the upgrade process shortly after.
what i hope to learn from this forum is a basic guideline and advice for reaching the goals i have set for the car. id like to see the car finish up around 400whp on a solid platform that could handle 500whp if i decided later i didnt have enough power.
its going to be a daily driver for the most part with once in a while trips to the track.
im also very interested to know about what the latest and greatest parts and vendors are. whats going to suit my needs the best and still be somewhat cost effective.
ive been skimming through countless threads already and even done a few searches as well.
(did ya know when you type things like "best turbo" the search chops off "best" and you get a LOT of matches
)
well, ive been rambling on enough so PLEASE point me the right direction and thanks for all the great threads so far!

i suppose a step by step response to it could be fun and help me come up with more specific questions
what the hey, i'm bored and don't have much else to do.the exhaust is a tricky one for me since it will be the first time ive put one on a turbo'd car. i guess my confusion comes in from the turbo connection itself. im under the impression that upgrading the turbo may cause things not to connect properly. any input on this would help me a bit. currently i'm looking more at factory based housings to avoid any extra issues. i do like the tomei and FP "color" options.
gauges and boost control are kinda mandatory. i really like the AEM digital and am probably going to get them unless there are known issues. so far i haven't been able to dig much up on them except "for sale" ads.
ive also been looking at an upgraded BOV/diverter. i think im going to stick to the advice in that thread since i have read another about them that showed possible issues. i like the idea of a solid upgrade without spending a fortune.
as far as the intercooler and piping is concerned, i've got my eye on perrin. i'm still not set on it though.
there's a ton more there too but, i don't wanna go on it all night. i also found the suspension/brake thread that was very informative. lots of good pictures and descriptions... i still didn't quite understand which rotors were the best bet for my money
maybe i was just too tired when i read it... time for another go
Let's take a step back for a second.
What are your financial constraints (if any)?
Why are you modifying your car? Track? Auto-X? Late night illegal street racing like in the fast and the furious?
Let's start there and then we can try to help you figure out what you might want to do next.
400whp is not impossible. What fuel do you plan on running? Pump or E85?
Throwing an upgraded turbo on a stock car is not recommended, but in the end it's all about the tuning.

ahhh
financial stuff is not really an issue. ive got a job thats really hard to lose unless you try lol. i also have a habit of buying the best that i can and waiting until i can afford it if needed. time is all good too since i expect it to take a while to finish. for giggles though, we'll say i've got about 2k that i could burn today on the project.
the car will be used on the track but, still remain a daily since its my only ride for the moment. no fast and furious crap. its fun racing when im driving a geo, not a car designed to win.
ill be running pump mostly. im sure ill find it in me to try a tank of race gas once in a while though and see how high i can get my numbers.
i definitely want to beef up the internals and bulletproof my motor before trying to hit 400. i'd like a solid enough platform that wont buckle under the stress of the power anymore than the stock setup would from the factory power.

thanks for the response! after reading your thread i get the impression that we have similar goals in mind. i'm probably gonna spend the rest of my night trying to research more on specific parts and vendors. for the most part i'll probably count on my local tuner shops to give me the information i'm looking for.
"I've been reading lots of other threads and searching trying to find my answers. I think the problem is too much information. Hence the thread that I started. I was hoping it was a simple answer, but that's not the case.
"
yeah... that kinda sums it up. i would hope that people understood that there are years worth of info on this forum and that the "best" parts and vendors aren't the same now as they were in 2003.
