Having a track based car like this to commute 8500 miles a year is the epitome of waste. I'd love to get rid of it, but didn't have any luck.
Its a payment and operation cost I can no longer justify. Unfortunately, I am a little upside down in this economy, and am stuck with it for another 6-12 months.

For me the X is the perfect car for my tastes. Fast and performance based, still gets decent gas mileage and I can cart the family around when necessary. I can drive all year round and I have never gotten bored with it yet.
I bought my car used for pretty cheap, so that helps. Maintenance can be sticker shock, luckily no clutch or brakes needed yet!!!
Funny thing for me, I went from trucks to this car. Mid life crisis for me I guess. 41 years old!!!
i would LOVE an S4.. > X in terms of looks, performance, awd system, looks, interior, ergonomics, looks, looks.. S4 is the most handsome car on the market right now, hands down. would definitely an option for me except I've decided to move away from awd after this.. that and if/when the RS4 comes out which would depress me insanelyOriginally Posted by dboz
I have gone to several new car shows recently and out of all the cars out there, the only ones I would even consider owning besides the X is a Hyundai Sonata, Audi S4 (why bother, costs more for less performance) and the A5 (but with 2 kids I need the 4 doors). Lost my job, unemployment does not cover the cost of an EVO and all it's baggage... I moved on to something better, something I can work and and repair for half the cost of an EVO and still make serious power!

I know where a lot of you guys are coming from.. When I originally set out to buy an X in 08 I got a 10% paycut in early oct '08 and got laid off permanently on late oct '08 (it was a shock to all of us) and I had to put off buying a house and a car. I ended up landing a job in feb 09, and it took me several almost a year to get back up on my feet and get my savings up to where they were before the paycut and layoff. It also helped to buy the car right after buying the house because the home loan didn't show up on my credit report and it "looked" like I had no debt at all.
Besides all of that, If I would have bought the X before the layoff, I probably would have had to default on the loan. Sh*t happens to good people...

Look at my sig.
The realization of what my lifestyle really is.........a truck lifestyle.
Too many DIY projects around the house, too many Home Depot trips (having to rent the home depot truck), too many Ikea runs (can't buy big items cause they don't fit in the car), too many camping trips (camping stuff doesn't fit in the car), too many Guadalupe river floating trips (again with the camping stuff), quite simply........the EVO's trunk couldn't handle it.
But the best part of all.........the wife has been hinting around about getting a ski boat, so I needed to get a truck to pull it.

While I don't think anyone will argue the uselessness of an Evo in those cases, why not just buy a used truck in ADDITION to an Evo?Originally Posted by JDW1479

I have a decent condition 1999 F-150 XLT that I paid pennies for, probably less than your mods cost, that does everything you listed. Hell, since I paid dick-all for it, I bet I do MORE with it, more nasty ****, plowing snow, mud running, rock banging, etc. Yeah, it's not a NICE truck, by any stretch of the imagination, but people's obsession with "one or the other" sort of confuses me; own both.
Clearly, if you're going to drop big cash on a ****ing NEW truck, your cash flow is going to be mitigated enough to possibly disallow for an Evo, but you can buy a functional truck for cheap.

When we had no kids, I had an Evo VIII with every mod I could think of, a 30R, running 11s on the pump gas map. I hung out with my car friends all the time!
When we had our first child, my Evo IX was only bolt on mods, but I did a ton of stuff with it (dyno days, hanging out with my car friends at least every other weekend, etc)
With two kids, I have an Evo X with just an exhaust and a flash, and ZERO time to mess with it or appreciate it. I carpool with the wife to save money, and it took me an entire year to put 8500 miles on it. Those miles are to and from work during rush hour traffic, with no opportunity to stretch its legs. In the rare case I am out on the weekends, my kids are in the car, and there is no way I am driving fast. Then there is the money issue:
Daycare: $1400 a month
Forumla: $200 a month
Kids food/clothes/diapers/doctor visits/toys: $300 a month.
Since Evo VIII days, my financial responsibilities went up $2k a month, and my time went down to zero.
Having a track based car like this to commute 8500 miles a year is the epitome of waste. I'd love to get rid of it, but didn't have any luck.
Until my kids get a little older, a $25k stickering wanna be performance car like a GTI that gets 31mpg makes so much more sense than a $35k stickering Evo that gets 23mpg.
Its a payment and operation cost I can no longer justify. Unfortunately, I am a little upside down in this economy, and am stuck with it for another 6-12 months.
OP, you're very observant. There are an abnormal number of Xs for sale. From our forum to Autotrader and even Cars.com. There are too many of them. It's hard to speculate why someone will get rid of their car and its a bit premature to immediately assume they cannot afford it. Things often change and people demand different things over time.Originally Posted by Noize

I think you hit it on the head Seth. It's about stages of life. I just let mine go this passed Thursday. It seems like everyone around me (friends, family, co-workers) are having more withdrawals than I am. I am satisfied with the decision and it will be better for me down the road. I was fortunate to be in a very favorable position as I throw down a significant amount of cash when I bought the car so I wasn't upside down or even close. It wasn't because I couldn't afford it. There are other things in my life that are a bit more important at this point. I'm relatively young and I've had the joy of owning a small handful of enjoyable vehicles at an early stage in my life. In about 2-3 years I'll resurface with ///M on my trunk lid.

I agree with your owning both comment, but my list was just getting started. I searched for months on finding a good cheap truck but I really couldn't find anything. Either they had lots and lots of miles on them or they were so old I would be affraid trying to tow a boat because it would put the truck out of its misery. Here in Texas, trucks are every where, and most people are very hard on them, so trying to find a decent truck, that hasn't been abused, that can pull a boat is some what hard, believe it or not.Originally Posted by hotdog

But the big kicker is, April was GMC/Chevy truck month, 0% financing plus I almost got 7000 off the truck in rebates, among other things, GMC made me an offer I couldn't refuse, so I pulled the trigger on buying the truck.
Don't get me wrong, I loved the EVO. It was the fastest car I ever owned. It was the only car I put that much money into. But thats just it, I would have continued to drop money into the car because I never saw the end of the mod list. The boost was addicting. So I checked myself into a doctor (aka GMC), got help with my problem, and now I can say I'm a recovering boostaholic.
Like the above Clark Kent quote, I guess I'm at a different stage of my life.

This is one of the main reason they are getting sold, most owners like to have that extra cash. Once you buy an Evo you want to start modding it as soon as you drive off the lot. I didnt mod my X till recent thats why it doesnt seem as a big expense. Some owners just need to take it easy on spending money on the X.Originally Posted by mike100

Economy. The most of the VIII's are paid off already, or most of the IX'S. So there is no reason to sell them. The X's are most of them is still owns good amount of money on the car, and the payment is high so as the insurance. This two makes it for a most people to have the car just simply too expensive.
As soon as the economy picks up for a regular joe's too, the cars will find a new owners with no problem. Most people is reserving they money, and very very caucus what they buy. The Evo is not a necessity for the most household.
In my opinion.
