are the evo 8's clear coated?
Folks who don't maintain their paint and then complain about it FTL is more like it.
I certainly can't comment on Mitsu's paint within the last 20 years, and you probably can't either, but I have owned 2 Evos - a RR and a GG. If you were to refer to the X, whose paint is very thin, I'd agree with you, but that's not what we're talking about. The (IX) GG car's paint is flawless, save for a single paint chip at 12K miles. The RR paint was flawless, as well. If one expects to have perfect paint while leaving the car out in the elements, treating the finish like crap, and lacking even the most basic maintenance routine, then, yes, it will fade in time. Same for any other paint. It very common to see bad paint comments almost universally stemming from folks who do nothing to maintain it.
Yep milky is not a problem. That is shows that you have a clearcoat and you are sanding it. If the milky white starts turning into the color of your car then you've sanded throught the clear and are in the base/color coat.
I would probably try to buff or clay bar overspray before wet-sanding. Although not a last resort wet sanding is more aggresive than most other methods. There's only so much clear on a car to sand and buff so pick your battles.
It should be apparent when the spot has been cleaned and dried if you sanded through the clear coat.
Also it matters what the overspray is to what method you use.
