are the evo 8's clear coated?
hey i have a weightless white evo and got some black spray paint over spray on it, i was instructed by a paint specialist to get 1500 grit sand paper and lots off water, and it will come off, then i will require a buff, no biggy but when i started it removed years of grim and the water was milky looking. there is no way in the world i went thro the clear coat, i figure maybe they werent and i just took off years of wax. does anyone know?
Yes, all evo 8`s and 9`s have at least a layer of clear coat. Maybe 2 or 3 even, GG looks mighty deep in the sun.
Was the spray paint a water based paint? There are some water paint thinners available at local hardware stores that should be light enough to work their way through the spray paint until the clearcoat with 2000 grit, but i would personally repaint the entire panel or at least pay a very skilled painter to blend the affected area. You could probably get away with a touch up and a reclear as white is a relatively easier color to blend than a silver or a blue.
Good luck!

no 100% sure its original paint, i remember hearing about the rr having some weird clear coat thing so thats why i ask. i seriously do think that there wasnt a clear coat on it. i did the whole car and it looks pretty bad. its got white paint pools all around on the ground. i slapped some wax on the hood and it looks like it did before just its a whole new cleaner looking white. so harm i guess, lol

Just because the water got milky looking, doesnt mean you went through the clearcoat. typically, when I wet sand clear coat, you will get a milky water. Thats the clearcoat. if you look very closely where you sanded you should be able to see the break from clear and paint, if you went through.
Did you polish the paint before waxing? FWIW, I would have suggested trying an aggressive clay like 3M, Meguires Red, Clay Magic Red before resorting to wet sanding.
It does come with a layer of clear coat. AFAIK, the difference for reds is that they use a red-tinted clear coat, hence why people get pink/red hues on their buffers when polishing/waxing.
Good luck getting the paint off, that sucks

1. Wet sanding makes paint look hazy (gross understatement). Imagine thousands upon thousands of tiny scratches covering every square inch of the surface. Polishing the finish would do wonders. Really.
2. Wax, as a best case scenario, is a protective coating. Polishing brings out the gloss in the paint; the wax simply protects it from the elements, so a second coat won't do much. Yes, there are waxes with a high jetting factor (the part that makes paint look deep and wet), but they won't help.
3. Do yourself a favor and go here, post on a board appropriate to your area, and get someone competent to polish your paint. Whoever told you to wet sand as a first step, as a novice no less, can't be taken seriously. Stop by the detailing forum if you have more questions. Good luck.

i have the crap red paint and its faded in several areas. Not to mention when i wax i get red in my wax can because apparently wax is too abrasive for unclear or weak cleared paint i dunno but thats how i knew my paint was garbage.
