Thinking of picking up an 03 evo 8
Not to beat a dead horse on ACD, but either Works or Gruppe-S has tinkered with the electronics to optimize its response for racing. Costs $350 IIRC.
The answer to your "better than an STI" comment is going to be heavily biased on this board. Obviously my opinion is that Evos in general are better than STI's, mostly because Evos are more nimble and responsive. But I've heard numerous stories about people beating the **** out of STI's and they've held up, which gets at your reliability question. Go to IWSTI.com and page through there-- PLENTY of discussion on this very topic.
Honestly, the ACD is just another item to break. My 3 lights have been on for the last 2 years and I dont see them turning off anytime soon. This is going to kill me on the resale.
ACD is really not a strong selling point IMO.
An 03 evo should suit you just fine

That you means you care about ACD. If you "could care less" that means you have some level of care which could be lower (ie, your level of care is 2 but could be 0).
If you couldn't care less, that means you don't have an ounce of care (ie, your level of care is 0 and can't possibly go lower).
Just sayin'...

Fixed it 4 ya
Well for starters 03-04 had transmission issues but will be much cheaper than an 05 evo 8/06 evo ix. To answer your ACD question, will you be auto crossing/road racing or just simply drag racing? ACD is not worth it at all drag racing but it is helpful when cornering.
Agreed.
I will be competing against my brother which has an STi swapped WRX wit the JDM ver. 7 engine that revs to 8200rpm. That's why i brought up the sti.
If the evo 8 without the ACD should still handle very well then i will be happy with it. And plus the 50/50 lock should make things better for the snow.

93k miles and running strong
Get a car that was maintained, don't worry about the body. My car has some dents, dings, scratches, clear pealing off the wing, etc but the engine, transmission, clutch are all original and work like new.
Body work is easy and cheap to fix. An engine or transmission is expensive.

LOL Thats the truth!! Hey what ever happened with your 03? what kinda problems are you finding? I'm so glad that guy took the 05 back I bought...
Personally I'm looking at 05-06 evos as I really like the idea of the ACD, sounds like it works great for cornering in all conditions, and I LOVE to drive fast in the snow and I also like to go to track days in the dry / wet / snow..
I'm actually looking at a 2005 evo someone has on this forum but its got 80k miles, I'm concerned about longevity as it needs to be my DD for work! But its supposedly running a stock clutch, and the previous owner replaced the stock clutch at 72k so that to me means it wasn't beat on very much. I would suspect these cars will hold up really well to miles if taken care of, just like Subarus (my wrx is going on 91k miles and no issues except stock turbo started to leak a little oil, $200 fix).
Anyway that 2005 evo has all 3 ACD lights on, he claims its just the pump and he has the pump to put in it, so I'm considering the car.. although I don't see why he wouldn't just put the pump in and THEN sell it..
Not 2 much is wrong, lots of litle things the idiot did wrong.
Spec Ops is doing a complete buiild for me tho. Engine build, tranny,t-case,fpred, suporting mods, ect ect

Holy crap man! Thats gotta be expensive work! If you had that much money to spend on an evo, why not get a low miles clean evo 9 with some mods?
when i baught the car i wasnt planning on doing all this right now (was future plans but wanted 2 have a few paychecks come in before it all) but the car had been beat 2 **** so i went ahead and did it now.
Gotcha.. well that sucks! So I take it there was some engine problems you were concerned about? What did you notice? I am curious because I will be looking at more evos soon!
No engine dmg, he had put vacum lines on wrong, bov on backwords ECT ECT. He had swapped engines on it (which i was not told about) and basicly had no idea on how 2 hook it back up properly.
So i basicly had no idea how many miles had been put on the engine, coulda been 100 or 100,000,000.
