Is it just a locked up centre differential like the sti's? Does this make a big difference in handling compared to the 2005 evos and evo 9s?

The car in the far future will be turning into a track car so this information would really help me

Thanks,
there's about 42% usefull information in this thread. all the rest is garbage. I'll do my best to try an up that percentage to at least 45%.

The 05+ EVO's didn't just come with ACD. They are also equipped with a front and rear LSD instead of just the rear unit. They also have more power out of the box, and are much more mod friendly. The ACD is a very good addition to the car if you plan to track it, or autocross. you'll notice the difference. it's only "just another thing to break" if all you use your EVO for is rolling slow, or just for looks. in other words, if you use the car the way it's supposed to be used, you'll like the ACD.

as for the tranny's and clutches, and general drivetrain issues/failures, it's driver error just about every time. i'm still going strong with 159,5XX miles on my 06 IX MR. that's right, the one with the transmission made of glass . The car still runs like the day I bought it after countless launches, autocrosses, trips to the drag strip, and beating on it on the street every day.

these are really great cars. it's been more reliable than the 2000 honda accord EX I had before I got the EVO.

good luck with your hunt. in my opinion though, if you're going to get an 8, shoot for an 05, but if at all possible, grab a IX.

good luck

I think there is definitely something to be said about driver error and equipment damage. Maybe the MR trans IS weaker than the gsr, but if driven properly the MR trans is probably just fine. My WRX trans was replaced at 35k miles by the first owner! He blew out 2nd gear cause he probably could shift worth a ****! I've read lots of people saying how weak a WRX trans & clutch are. But guess what, 91k miles on my wrx now and the clutch / tranny work flawless.

Only thing is, when buying one of these cars used, it would be crucial to know the signs of a failing engine / trans / clutch etc.. being new to Evos, I can only guess based on what I know about my wrx. Engine ticks / knocks, trans grinding from bad synchros, skipping out of gear, clutch slipping at high rpms in 4th gear etc.. is there anything to look for that is specific to Evos vs other cars?

boost leaks at the throttle body shaft seals, injector seals, and hose connections. other than that, I can't really think of any.
