Thinking of picking up an 03 evo 8
Thinking of picking up an 03 evo 8
Any reliability issues i should know about?
I also had a question regarding the ACD and how the 2003 evos did not come with them.
Is it just a locked up centre differential like the sti's? Does this make a big difference in handling compared to the 2005 evos and evo 9s?
The car in the far future will be turning into a track car so this information would really help me
Thanks,

Well for starters 03-04 had transmission issues but will be much cheaper than an 05 evo 8/06 evo ix. To answer your ACD question, will you be auto crossing/road racing or just simply drag racing? ACD is not worth it at all drag racing but it is helpful when cornering.

If I remember correctly 03-04 had transmission issues when they first came out but that doesn't mean an 05 transmission is solid. My stock 05 transmission had 3rd gear, 5th gear, reverse, second gear and all of the synchros just replaced by me with only 27k miles...guess I got the lemon.

Posts like these that pop up in every "should I buy this evo 8" thread are getting obnoxious. Do you understand/realize that not every person who purchases an Evo can or wants to spend 18k+ on an Evo? If someone is looking at an '03 that costs $14,000, what makes you think they want to spend, at the very least, an additional $4,000 on a '06 with comparable mileage and condition? These cars are coming down in price to a point where they are affordable to many ranges of people, and your comment in a thread that asks an opinion about ACD, among other things, is essentially useless.

Besides, the OP never mentioned a word about price or budget so who are you to say that's a primary consideration? He did ask about reliability and since IX's are newer and the last of a generation, they tend to have more bugs worked out.
Yes I just said "get a IX," but information as to why I said it is ALL over this forum. Either way, the reasons for my overly simplistic comment are these:
- ACD which, as others have noted, is worth paying for, especially in a car which is going to be road raced
- IX's have space for a slightly wider intercooler, but every little bit helps
- 10.5 hotside turbo
- MIVEC
- MIVEC
- MIVEC
Someone could spend $4000 less and get an VIII but, in my humble opinion, $4000 worth of mods doesn't easily make up for even those basic things.

Couldn't care less about ACD
