Getting good power on 91 Octane

Who's done it and how? I need tips, tricks, etc. I really don't want to have to turn to meth injection. 400-450 whp (mustang) or better. What are your setups?

Maybe you should try getting a BBK full or an FP black .. and possibly build your motor too while your at it.. GL

Also, here are some other parts that i can recommend to you
nisei competition intercooler, nisei LICP , ported invidia O2 housing . These would probably make the most power out of what you could get.

maximize the effeciency of the whole setup. Well selected parts, porting where neccessary, etc. Its def. possible, but meth sure would make it easier. Im on the fence as well whether I want to get into meth w/ 91 oct. But we'll see... GL

Thanks for the tips. From my research it's looking like even with a built 2.3, ported everything, big cams, and bbk/fpblack/35R setup I'd be looking at around 400whp max. on a mustang dyno. Not much for a lot of cash spent.

I'm now wondering if it would be cheaper to get something with a V8 to make big power on 91.

When youre limited by compression adding more cubes is often the answer.

A lower compression 2.4l (perhaps in the 8:1 range) with higher boost would definitely help on pump.

two things to consider and think deep thoughts about that are really important with 91 octane. Heat management, and airflow.

Wow and I thought 93 would be a pain to work with. 91 would be really hard to push

91 isn't that bad to work with. you just gotta manage your a/f ratio and tune a little more conservatively. in cali, home of pisstane, theres a ton of guys making good power on 91. full exhaust with o2 housing, ex. manifold, intake, throttle body, porting, fuel pump, turbo, boost controller, cams, and a good tune can get you 400 or damn close. ( well, maybe more like 350+). good luck!

honestly making 420whp, I feel thats not even that much. my 93 goal is 450whp, so I dont think 91 would really keep up mod for mod

Well having dealt with 91 octane in Los Angeles with a turbo car is tough. heavens turbo had some good advice. I also have to add that I've found it also depends on how knock prone your Evo is. Mine unfortunately is knock prone and I've been running water/methanol injection on my Evo and my previous turbo cars for many years. That was the only way to get the performance that I wanted. A good intercooler I've found helped me on my 91 octane only map. I was able to run a little more timing and boost when I added my ETS 3.5" intercooler. Playing around with a colder spark plug heat range can also help. All in all 91 octane really sucks period!

I was able to extract good power on my Chevy V-8 with low octane gas. On my little V-8 Chevy Luv swap I was running low 12 second times on believe it or not, 87 octane. That little truck was light and with a mild build up along with aluminum cylinder heads, I was able to pull it off. I wish it was that easy on my Evo.

That's what's making think of getting something with a V-8. Love the Evo though so I want to work with what I have.

So if porting everything on 91 is so important to get more air flowing into the engine wouldn't it make sense to to get high flow rate turbo for the car even if you can't run it on higher boost? Red/Black or 35R at 21-23 psi? Or do these turbo's only have high flow rates at high 30+ boost settings?

Anthony,
Which kit do you recommend to max out the stock block on 91 octane? I'm thinking in the range of 400-450whp on a mustang. I just noticed a thread from GST where an Evo X made 445 on their mustang with a 6262 and stock block and cams. That's a big turbo and I'm sure it lags quite a bit and might not be very streetable. I'm starting to realize you can't make those hp numbers on 91 while retaining good spoolup. How would a 35R compare to the 6262? What do you recommend? HTA? 3582? 86? Ball bearing? I don't know much about the Garretts.

I'm thinking of selling the Evo and getting the 2011 Mustang GT 5.0. Seems to make a lot more sense economically for making decent power on 91 octane.
