WRX owner soon to be EVO owner
Haha yeah I guess so, but I've ridden in a few Evo X's and they were pretty damn nice! Ride was solid and smooth, interior was much nicer than a evo8 and moderately nicer than a 9. Body styling is better on the X if you ask me. Not to mention its years newer, has AYC, and pulls more lateral Gs than an 8 or 9 stock for stock. So, what exactly is better about the older ones if I may be so bold? I hear they are lighter and therefore slightly faster in a dragrace but not by much.
[Edit:] I don't have time to go through all the gent's posts, but if you search for this user's posts on the X forum, he does a pretty good job of describing the difference after buying an example of both generations.

I don't own a X, but I had test driven one pretty hard (since I knew the sales person pretty well). It corners better, but while partially thanks to the Super-AYC, it also does have wider and taller wheels with thinner tires... and that often gets overlooked and definitely accounts for something. But despite that, it doesn't feel as nimble or as fun as the VIIIs and IXs, which were slightly smaller, slightly lighter and a bit more tossable, also thanks to its slightly quicker steering. Also, I've heard that the Super-AYC combined with hard driving will eat through the rear tires like there's no tomorrow. I remember Motor Trend or some other publication saying that on their long-term test car, they had to replace the rear tires in 9-10k miles, which is definitely not fun.
I've come pretty close to just buying a X on more than one occasion, but I'm glad that I made the decision to stick with my stock car.
Interesting stuff. So it sounds like if you want the more race-car feeling and are willing to sacrafice some luxury and years, your better with a 8 or 9. But if you daily drive it and would prefer for a 'nicer' car all around and don't care if you lose a little road connection and 'flickability' then an X might be better.
I think I'm just going to have to get a 9 and an X and just drive them both on and off
now if only i had money for either.. ohh... I made myself sad..

While the X's interior is nicer, I was a little disappointed that it didn't come with a Momo steering wheel. It's not just the name either, as my steering wheel just feels better. The X's steering wheel just didn't really look sporty at all, plus the leather that is used to wrap it feels a bit slippy, which is a big deal to me since you hold the steering wheel every moment you drive. Plus I do love me some corners, if you know what I mean.
