banging noise when shifting hard

When i shift fast from 2-3 or sometimes 1-2 i hear a bang noise which sounds like its coming from my rear diff. I can hear it coming from under the rear seat...this doesnt happen everytime i shift hard either only sometimes. What mount(s) should I check? any ideas

its called your letting the clutch out to fast and that sounds is the sudden load of the drivetrain being transfered to your rear diff gears..... its a great way to kill your rear diff.

learn to drive better and the sounds wont be there. you cant just pop the clutch out super quick when you shift

like they said it's "normal" for an evo, but i don't think it's from bad driving so much as weak rear bushings. I can slam gears in plenty of cars and not get that noise, but the evo takes a little more finesse. You'll get a feel for it don't worry.

i wouldnt call that sound normal, unless you dont have a problem having your diff rebuilt
i can guarantee this sound is not from the bushings on the rear diff

Normal as in Every Evo has the same problem..yes, change the diff bushings, and mustache bushings and the prob will go away--they are too soft and flex under hard shifting causing the banging noise---BTW there are a ton of threads on this

Rear diff bushings. Upgraded poly bushing help with the rear thump.

incorrect. you have no idea how many miles are on his car, there for you dont know how worn his diff/ mustache bar bushings are. ive got 104k on my 8 and i makes that sound fairly easily. can shifting hard make the clunking noise from the rear diff, sure. does that mean that the noise is due to his inablitity to drive, no. you can go to many sites (i.e. Buschur, AMS etc...) that sell solid rear diff mounting solutions as well as replacement urethane inserts to replace the soft factory mounts. not only do they claim that they aid in better 60' times but they get rid of the annoying clunk from the rear diff during hard shifts. more people on this forum need to spend more time helping folks out and less time trying to jump someone at any given opportunity. sorry for the rant but if you can help someone, do it, if not the shut the F up....... hope that helps bro

i dont care if the car has 10 miles on it, if your shifting hard and letting the clutch out fast you will get that noise in the rear diff. that noise is not good for the diff at all

yes the aftermarket bushings might help out, but its not gonna get rid of that noise when you pop the clutch out from fast shifting.

Great Advice. Replacing the rear bushings eliminated my rear thump on hard shifts completely.

the simplest and cheapest way to cut back this noise is the beatrush kit
then we have the energy suspension kits and then the mustache delete bar which sheds pounds also

I would think the soft diff bushings would actually help the diff not take shock of fast clutch release.

just like everyone else said. replace those rear diff bushings and you should be all good. But you still should probably take it easy, and learn how to speed shift without slamming gears.
