How to tell if turbo is Blown?
How to tell if turbo is Blown?
I bought a turbo and I am not implying it is blown, but from simple eyesight, how can you tell if it is blown? I am taking it to get professionally checked out but I would like to know for my sake if it is in good condition. It seems to be pretty rusty and the exhaust side has a lot of carbon build. I checked for shaft play...by putting finger in the center of turbo and moving it from side to side. Seems to hold steady, just a tiny tiny little movement if any at all. Thx for any input.
Sign of a turbo going bad is:
1: blue/gray smoke in your exhaust. That means your burning oil.
2: Check shaft play ie the intake blades up/down left/right and in/out
There are more things but usually the first sign is blue/gray smoke.

Shaft play would be the first sign.
I bought a turbo with 3 weeks on it, then looked at it and the compressor hit the housing at times. At least the guy who sold it to me took it back.
Good luck.

hard to tell if you bought used turbo, usually when you have oil in lower intercooler pipe, it means seal needs to be replaced. But if turbo is blown, blue/white smoke from the exhaust when WOT. as far checking for shaft play, depends on the turbo/size/model. if there is some build-up and wheel is not touching the compressor housing it's ok, best way to find out is to install it...
Thank you all for the replies.!!
I bought a 6262 T3 .82 A/r Precision aluminum billet turbo. It looks pretty worn out but internals seems to be good. I was thinking of sending to precision to clean, inspect and make sure everything is good. Its pricey for this process, so i might install and see how it plays out. I checked for shaft play and there was not much or any.
