"Bolt On" vs Taken to Shop

So was wondering what kind of list might be out there of true bolt on that you did yourself and something that you took to the shop. Here is my guess of things. I know that on the forums there is lots of help and there are videos out there on the net for a lot of things.

"Bolt On"
Intake
Exhaust
Some Turbos
FMIC?
FMIC Piping
Manifold
Injectors?
Cams

Thanks

Steve

I wouldnt really say cams is something you can do yourself. Most people, unless they tune their car themselves, would have to take their car to get tuned after putting them in. Just my opinion though.

This all depends on your mechanical capabilities and your tools. I have done everything from an exhaust to a full engine / tranny swap.

id say i have some technical skill, and would be comfortable with most of that list i think, just was wondering what baisc mods that most people have, if they were able to do them themselves.

also saves money doing yourself and it feels good knowing you did it.

I have very VERY basic mechanic skills before this car, I did everything on your list besides the cams and I don't regret any of it. It will take up alot of your time though, but now I know some much more about my car.

Cams should not be considered bolt-on. All non-mechanical (moving parts) are typically labeled bolt-on, although there are some exceptions.

I suggest you learn by starting with the small stuff and with someone who knows what they are doing. You will learn a lot by doing what is within your capabilities.

A person with basic knowledge of mechanics can do anything on your list, with the exception of cams.
I would do it yourself. You will have more pride in your car, and save some money.

it REALLY depends on your tools. Over the years as I've acquired more tools I've found myself doing more mechanical work myself. However, you should always consult the forums prior to any mechanical work. Lots of great info already on here and lots of knowledgable foks.

is this a post you created because you and a buddy of your were arguing about what is considered a bolt-on modification? to me, Everything is a "bolt-on" unless its a motor or transmission rebuild. Because those are the only things id bring my car to a shop for. I installed my own Meth kit but that is hardley a "bolt-on" for most people. I could do my own clutch which is not as easy for the average person. This thread is pretty much worthless.

MBC too. I installed everything on my car except the gauges. I used a 90 dollar socket set and a few screw drivers. I'm personally not comfortable swapping turbo's or install cams. I have the skill set to do it, just not the experience and am hesitant to make a mistake resulting in something breaking or having to pull it all apart again to do it right.

As long as you have some technical skills an have the tools, I would say you can install everything on the list but the cams. The cam's would take more since you have to take everything appart and torque everything down to specs. Also your messing withe the timing belt and if you dont know how to put everything back together and on TDC. BYE BYE motor!
