Buying a high mile evo
Buying a high mile evo
I found a high mile evo 8 near were i live and i talked the guy down to 16k. It has just over 110k on it but appears to be in fairly good condition considering it has 110k. I currently have a part time job on top of school so most of my paychecks will go into paying this thing off. How are high mile evos for reliability? because if it blows up and needs a huge amount of money to fix it i wont be able to drive it for awhile. If it does blow i have a backup vehicle but it would still suck to be paying off my evo and not driving it.
I understand the chance of getting something unreliable is apart of any any used car but if this will be a matenance nightmare I should wait until i can get one that is a little less tired.
Also I have a family friend who rebuilds cars who will take a look at it sometime this week and see how the engine is.
Thanks
edit: I checked carfax and back in 09 it was in an accident with a "stationary object".

IMO, its 3 Grand to high for 100,000 mileage car. KBB: Says a car with that mileage is worth: $13865. And if I might add thats for an 05' GSR in EXCELLENT CONDITION
. In fair or poor condition its $11K-$12K.
However if I was you, I'd wait and save 8K, put that as down payment and maybe trade. These are really reliable and strong cars. But I'd steer away with something with that much mileage.

Thanks for the reply's guys. Should i talk him down more? or just move on. I ideally would like to get a nice 9 down the road but after all the cost of importing it I don't think it would be possible for a very long time.

I have gone to see/drive the car and it does hall *ss. For some reason i am having a hard time letting this one go. But it may be due to the fact that it is the first one i have ever seen or drove. It also may be that i can afford it and still have a little money for other things.
Thanks again for all the input
I can speak from personal experience on this.WAIT!! There are good deals to be had.
I was looking at a EVO VIII with 100kmiles for $15k

I ended up waiting and got a hell of a deal on a IX MR

OP, is the car registered in Canada yet? One thing to keep in mind is that importing one into Canada is a major PITA. That service is worth a lot of time, money, and migraines. That said its still not a great deal. I got mine for 21k CDN plated on the road and it had 57k on the clock and was pretty clean / unmolested.
At the very least you should drive the car to make sure everything is ok. IMO the top concerns would be tranny grinds, center diff whines, clutch slip....stuff like that. Those are instant thousands you will lose.
Another thing I'd like to add is that an evo is not a car that you should get if you're cash strapped. This thing is definitely more expensive to maintain than a honda. Especially with the high mileage services. I'm in university right now too and honestly I probably would've bought a cheaper car in retrospect. Its been 5 months since I bought it and already I've sunk a total of 30gs into my car. Even more with gas and insurance.

@deeman101
Yeah, one of that advantages of that dealer is they do all the import work.
@68wsteve
I understand what your saying and i had a bloody good deal on a evo 9 with lots of mods that was almost as good as yours. But the problem is importing it from the US turns a 20k purchase into a 27k purchase so i am trying to choose from the very limited options up in canada(since they were never sold here).
edit: Do you guys think i should talk him down to 12-13k? It is in bloody good condition considering the miles and it probably cost a few thousand to bring it into the country.

Are they going to make you pay for the import costs? Theres duties at the border, plus 6.1% since its not North American, GST, fees for the inspection at Canadian Tire, etc. I'd still talk them down a couple thousand if they cover all that. Definitely more if they won't.
EDIT: Don't be afraid to pass up on it. You can definitely get a lower mileage, better condition evo from the states and import it yourself for less.

Price is up to you but I would not let 110k miles scare you. My buddy turned 200k on his about 2 months ago so I am sure he is well over $210k by now and still running perfectly fine.
