Evo 8 head swap in '02 eclipse

I'm Brandon, i'm your everyday backyard mechanic.
i do NOT own a Evo however i have a 2002 mitsubishi 2.4l eclipse, i'm in the middle of a evo 8 head swap w/ garrett gtx3582r turbo; Hp goal around 650 to the wheels. i don't really know how to use this site that well but i'm trying to figure it out. i was registered to club3g and i've just gotten tired of everyone being jack asses when i ask a simple question. i do use the search so whatever questions i do ask in the future are because i didn't find what i'm looking for

thanks, yeah i've realized it's a bigger project than i thought but all is well. it will be completed hopefully by this up-coming summer. i still need my Wiseco pistons and K1 rods to even have my engine back from the machine shop. i'm doing all the work myself minus doing the internal stuff just because... well, i don't have the proper machinery to do so.

so question. . . . . is a 9:1 compression ratio OKAY with what i'm doing?? i'm wanting a outcome of around 650-700hp to the wheels. but i wanna be able to run pump gas. can i still run 20-35lbs of boost with 9:1 compression ratio pistons??? planning on using Garrett gt3582r turbo.

Are you also doing the awd swap? That's a lot of hp for the stock 3g tranny.

i already have a lsd in the tranny, and no; only head swap. before i put the lsd in there i'd gone through 4 transmissions on the sohc head. (megan racing headers, megan racing short shifter, fidanza lightweight flywheel, exedy stage 3 clutch, custom cold air intake)

Welcome to the forum... also a member of Club3g, but preferred the .org before it went viral. Currently own a V6... can't say too much to answer your question, though 9:1 from what I recall is in the ballpark, but you're running it pretty close. I've heard V6 10:1 guys blow something before they even come close but I would err on the side of caution. Getting those numbers is close to a miracle from what I've seen. You're on the right track though by swapping in the Evo 8 head.

If this thread gets you nowhere, pm some of the OLDER guys on the .com forum, they've seen quite a bit done with the 3G and can definitely give some advice without the 'noob' harassment.. Maybe BlueBomber might be the first one to contact. He did the first AWD and can be found on the forum and cardomain http://www.cardomain.com/ride/255728...ubishi-eclipse

Welcome. Looks like your local to the area.

I don't mean to sound like a jerk and I do admire your determination on this project.
But wouldn't it be cheaper to buy a 2g? that is awd? I own both an Evo and a tastefully modded 98 GSX; both being blasts to drive in their own ways. The money your spending on your eclipse now could be going towards a 400+hp on an awd platform.. Which is fairly easy to accomplish with DSM's.

Anyway, I hope to see the swap as it sounds cool and i'm local. Good luck!

thanks for all the advise and the respect of the fellow evom community. i'll definatly contact those guys if i run into any trouble or have any questions, and yeah poeple have been asking me why i don't just buy an evo 8 or a 2g eclipse but my answer will always be the same, my 3g eclipse was my first car and i guess i have a attatchment to it.

so i guess just a quick run down, i am 18 yrs old, i've grown up around cars, my dad owns a body shop in idaho and we have our own paint booth and so on. i started doing body work when i was probably around 8 or 9. did my first engine swap (with my father) at 11. He owns a 38' Studebaker, we put a Chevy 6 in it w/ 2 quad carbs. i know i'm young but i am very mechanically enclined.

it's nice to know there's others in the area tho.

the only thing im having difficulties with is, well after i get my long block back from the machine shop, i'm confused on where the coolant lines (from the firewall) go to now on the evo 8 head. before they atttached onto the back of my intake mani on the 2.4 head but i've noticed the evo 8 head's intake mani doesn't have the rear water pipe attached to it like the 2.4. i know the lower radiator hose just connects to the rear water pipe on the evo 8 but there's quite a few other lines that are moved.

I hope you finish your build I think you will be very happy in the end especially when you see the look on someones face after you wax them in a 3g. You should hit up a few guys on c3g about the water lines I'm sure someone knows on there.

yeah i just gotta find the older guys on there not the young pms-ing guys lol. haha i've been thinking about that too, people always look down upon the 3g eclipse's but this one will be smoking sti's and evo's. there's some stupid black porche gt turbo around here and from what i hear he's only running around 15lbs of boost and only like 500hp actually i've recently been going to mitsubishi for some factory parts i want new not used, and they've been wanting me to bring it by when i'm finished. they want pictures

That's pretty creative... I never thought about doing that.

Always liked the idea of a 2F2F style eclipse that goes fast

i found a valve cover!! i already sanded it down and ready for paint, i also shaved off those ugly lines with the MG logo on the cover. so i've gotten most of my evo 8 factory parts, except the dipstick and tube, and the intake manifold bracket. i bought a "intake manifold bracket" from this guy off here and i got some other bracket. it's off a evo 8 but i dunno what it's for, any idea's???

Evos have an inlet on the water pump pipe for the second heater core coolant line. You could run it thru the throttle body coolant inlets and tee off one of the head lines. The bracket you are asking about, goes on the timing belt side of the intake manifold and holds the connector for the #1&2 coil.
Good luck on the build.
Post some pics, i'll help you out. The head swap I did had no heater core, I got lucky with no coolant lines!
