Like everyone else has said, choose the car that fits your needs best.
I personally read every mag. comparison on the two and then went and looked at both in person at dealerships...it really came down to what I like most about the cars:

Sti-faster straight line, really nice interior, little less stiff, at the time I thought the body was ugly, but now that I see them more often, if I were to own one, I would make it wingless...looks better

Evo-Very solid/stiff feeling that reminded me of my Type-r, seats are great, handling is awesome! and I really liked the look of the Evo better...

Overall, I am glad I went with the Evo...there is so much knowledge out there on this motor alone, you would be surprised what little money you spend on upgrades would do to your performance! If I had to have to cars right now in the high 20k range, low 30k it would be an Evo and Sti!

dude, give him a break, he is a newbie and is entitled to one or two screw ups, no big deal.

Question Same Boat

I am in the same boat as the original starter of this thread. I have a hard time making up my mind on this. The main issue that is throwing me off is all the awful stories I have read about the Evo's clutch. I know ppl are going to say that its fine as long as you go easy on it. I currently have a 2001 Subaru Impreza 2.5RS, I have almost 80K miles on it and have driven the living crap out of the thing. The clutch has never been an issue despite my hundreds of clutch abusing incidents. If I buy an Evo, I will buy it for the hours of adrenaline rushes which include a great deal of clutch abuse, if it cant handle it, then it should be advertised as a minivan. As far as I know the STi's clutch is almost bulletproof and can handle launches much better. Test drive both. I like the Mitsu's drive more and the seats, but that damn reliability and clutch factor is making it a stale-mate.

P.S. My clutch abuse I dont mean just dropping the clutch during launches. Heavy downshifting, midturn clutch shifts, clutch-kicking maneuvers, etc is all part of happy driving. If all that is said about the Evo's clutch is true and it has a hard time with stock power, then it will most likely be destroyed with even minor bolt ons ( exhaust, intake) or/and a dynoflash/exede.

enough **** about not searching...he's a newbie and obviously didn't know how it worked, but it's nice to see how you all gave him a warm welcome...

anyway, even though i don't own an evo or sti, i've read and heard enough about em to offer you this advice...if you're more concerned about the track specs and racing the car, go with the evo as it's handling is better and it's more often than not been stated as being more fun to drive than the sti...but if you want a daily driver that's more comfortable and more fluent when it comes to shifting, the sti is your better bet. the sti is also more "muscle" if you want to call it, it's louder, nastier sounding, and seems maybe a bit more intimidating with the huge wing and scoop. it just seems less sporty to me, though...less jumpy and stuff. personally, i'm a lancer guy and would definitely go with the evo because i like the styling better, both interior and exterior, and the hp is increased with easy modding, etc. i love mitsubishi and its cars in general (everything except the service, and the guys at my local dealer, at least), so that would be the other reason i'd get an evo. it would never cross my mind to get an sti over the evo because of that. good luck with the choice though. hopefully you'll go evo over sti...lol

Buy the car you think looks best inside and out, obviously you'll be the one to look at it everyday.

I do stress the use of the search function on my own board but since Im one of the unbias'ed persons here why not toss in a few..

Ive driven both sti and evo 8 even drove an evoIII. Simply put the cars are so close to each other you could sneeze and forget which one you purchased..until you try to turn on the non existant radio in the STI lol Out the gate the STI just pulls harder throughout the entire powerband until hitting the 155 limiter bah. Where as the Evo 8 had more of a "build momentum" take off. Im sure it will also hit 155 but the salesman would have left a wet seat on 495 lol.

I've been mitsu for years and honestly I wouldnt purchase another mitsu. It would be great if mitsu came out with an upgraded Evo 8 its sad when the upgraded version is just as good as the standard of the other maker. If you can deal with understeer and no stock radio yet love one hell of a bulletproofed 6sp get the STI if your a 4g63 fan, mitsu fan and never having to worry about wheel slip ****** the evo!

By the way I didnt purchase either, I went another direction still awd, AYC and last but not least twin turbo

The STI isn't louder than the EVO. It is extremely quiet actually. It's one of the quietest cars i have ever driven. Once you get on it, the engine noise drowns out the exhaust note too.

The STI has higher quality in most fields, unlike the EVO's crappier interior (aside from the recaros). However, the STI is NOT mod friendly at all. Just a turbo back exhaust will cause boost creep which leads to fuel cut.

Evo handles better, easy mods, driver's car.

I have driven an sti with a "kakimoto?" (sorry if I butchered that) exhaust, and it sounded like a Harley with straight pipes. It's unreal the sound that thing car put out with a good exhaust.
