looking at my first evo 2003 for $23k
So, you're saying the 03 I have with only 10k miles, bone-stock, clean title, never modded in perfect condition is only worth $18k?? That's weird since I saw a similar car sell for over $24k about a month ago.
A $16k Evo 9 is going to be higher mileage and probably come with problems or parts that need replacing.
Personally, I would rather buy a stock, or relatively stock Evo and build it from there.
on the other hand,it will probably blow up soon after you buy it and no it's probably not worth anywhere close 23k.if i were to pay 23k,it would have to be a show car with big power and all receipts, dynos, and a blueprint of the engine build.just b/c he said so and so built it doesn't mean it's true.
you will hear lots of stuff around here like,"so and so built, with so and so internals and only 2000 miles on the build, just broken in,yada-yada-yada.i'm not saying everyone is lying, but come on man,why does everyone sell their cars and/or parts as soon as they get broken in?
i just bought a 2003 with tons of upgrades, more than the car you are looking at for 17k and it was a one owner and it also made 540whp on an AMS GT37R kit on a mild pump gas tune, but with a double pumper and some injectors my tuner got it to 708whp at only 30psi.
it had an AMS 2.3 bottom end, head studs, oliver rods,AMS pistons, ported+polished head,VSR,Sparktech, cams, intake,AEM EMS,Tein mono flex with EDFC,and the list goes on and on.anyway the guy i bought it from had his mechanic buddy build the motor.it lasted less than 7,000 miles.upon taking it apart i found a few builder errors.the mechanic in question had built several solid EVO's,but he screwed up on this one.
buying a modded EVO is a crapshoot and buying a stock EVO and turning into a 600whp car is going to really set you back big time, but as long as you don't literally blow it up you will have all of those expensive parts to work with.
Car sounds like its worth about 18k let's not forget its a nicely built 2003.
that's what it is.you are buying and taking a shot that it holds up,it probably won't,but then you get to experience the real joy of owning an EVO;rebuilding it when it blows.that's what i'm doing now and it really is a fun,but expensive hobby.
parting words,do NOT pay 23k for that car,get that IX above for 25k and have someone haul it to you for $1000,or look around and be patient, you will find an EVO 8 like the one you are looking at for under 20k.they come up for sale weekly.
I am currently 22, i ive in north dakota working on the oil rigs, i work about 80 to 100 hours a week and spend the rest of my time with my wife and 2 kids, so i dont have a whole lot of spare time, and for that reason i want to buy something that i am going to enjoy without having to put hours of tuning and modding into on the weekends, my last dsm was too much of a project for me with my work schedule
The odds of you finding an Evo like I described in your immediate area are very slim. You'll likely have to travel to get the right car, and make a few trips at that. Not willing to do that? Fair enough. Then consider a different car or be ready to deal with whatever comes up.
