And so it's time.
And so it's time.
After doing months of research, days of begging Owner's of dealerships for a test drive, and finally upgrading the turbo on my dodge.....I've finally decided...
I no longer want an evo X. From what I've read, the evo 9 (or 8) is where it's at. At a much cheaper price, I should be able to pick up my evo within a few months. The suspense is killing me.
but now, I need to know... which evo do I get???!
I like the look of the 8 better than the 9, but thats the last thing I care about on a race car. I know that the MR doesn't have a sunroof, but srsly who cares. The MR also has softer/better springs if im not mistaken...
so heres what I need to know....what exactly does the 9 have that the 8 doesnt?
What exactly does the MR have the the base model doesn't?
Ive searched the forums, and people don't seem to be clear on whats what with those evos.
Lastly, I've seen topic where people say that the 6 speed is weak/breaks easily under pressure or excissive speed is this true? Also, is the 5 speed good on the highway? I personally don't really mind the difference, I'd go with the more reliable one, I suppose. I've never owned a 6 speed, only 5 speeds.
hmm just let me know what you all think
im dying of anticipation and the research ive done is a dissapoint!
Edit: PS I have a 2003 lancer, a 2008 lancer, a 2005 dodge srt4, and Once upon a time ive tracked in an eclipse, m3, and rsx. none compare to the almighty evo.
the reason why I wanted the X was for the comfort and conveniences of my 08 lancer, but after buying the srt-4 Ive decided I can survive without the comfort/conveniences. I just want raw power.

Get a 5 speed. 9 has a bigger turbo and Mivec timing but other than that there's not much difference. As a track car I'd get an 03 or 04 no acd 5 speed, that will be your most reliable way. Or an rs.
MR has the 6 speed, aluminum roof (I would kill to get rid of my sunroof for an aluminum one), Bilstein shocks/struts, and BBS wheels. Other then that, not much difference in the engine bay.
As for highway cruising, it's around 3k at 70mph for the 5 speed. The 5 speeds are the stronger trans. Usually when launching, that's when they break.
You making this into a track car?
If I would start all over, I would have went with a IX RS.

Four models were available in the US. All models used the same 286 hp (213 kW) engine.
Standard – revised 5-speed, standard model
RS – ralli sport, revised 5-speed, aluminum roof, gauge pack, minimal interior, also no radio
SE – Special Edition, aluminum roof/hood, and front fenders, split seven-spoke forged aluminum BBS wheels in "diamond black" finish, HID headlights with integrated fog lights, red-stitched Recaro seats
MR – 6-speed, Bilstein monotube shocks, split seven-spoke forged aluminum BBS wheels, aluminum roof, hood, and front fenders, gauge pack, HID headlights with integrated fog lights, vortex generator, front brake cooling ducts and custom MR badging.
All of the American models are the same in power, but may differ in performance. The only thing that sets them apart is the Evo RS, which is 80 lb (36 kg) lighter than the MR and SE models.
To the standard model, the Sun, Sound and Leather package added a power sunroof, HID xenon headlamps with integrated fog lights, a slightly different stereo headunit (with no integral amplifier), slightly upgraded speakers in the front doors and parcel shelf, a 4.1-channel amplifier under the driver's seat, a powered, trunk-mounted Infinity subwoofer, black leather seating surfaces, leather-trimmed door panels, slightly revised center armrests in the front and rear, and separate rear side headrests. This model deleted the GSR's headliner-mounted sunglass holder to make room for the sunroof.

IX RS will decimate all, after, you put about fifteen grand in it or more. If we have to, overnight parts from Japan.
Seriously though, it depends on what you want to do with the car. As a daily driver 8/9 6 speeds are fine, if you want power get a 8/9 5 speed. Keep in mind the price difference between the 8 and 9's are quite different so you will have more money on mods with an 8 than a 9. Not to mention finding a 9 in stock or stockish shape that hasn't been molested by it's previous owner is rather difficult these days.
Good luck.

Tons of great info guys. Smh i forgot wikipedia existed. Darn college professors wont let you use it as a reputable source...
Er anyway.... it sounds like the five speed is the way to go. Id want mivec, im sure. Im 50/50 on the aluminum roof/sunroof. Shocks are upgradable so im good there. Sounds like a plain 8 or 9 is what i need. Not close minded to the mr, but it sounds more daily driver-ish. I have my lancer de for that lol.
Thanks guys. This shaves off a ton of searching and test driving/begging.
Edit: one more thing. Is the acd worth it? Does it cost more to maintain? Am i better off without it?
And just to clarify, the 8's do NOT come with mivec? Right?
