Evo 9 MR - stick shift?
Evo 9 MR - stick shift?
Hey guys,
I'm currently thinking of selling my M3 for an Evo 9, without going into too much detail I had a few questions.
I went to my local mistu dealership today to take an 2012 Evo MR for a test drive today to get a feel for what an Evo will feel like compared to my M3. Through talking and some research, it seems like if I want an Evo 9 - The MR seems to be the way to go. I want to maintain *some* of the "luxury" feel of my BMW, and the MR comes with leather - which is good enough.
Ontop of that I want a 6speed, so the MR also accomplishes that. However, on the Evo X model, it seems like when you switch to an MR it ONLY comes with paddle shifters.
Does the Evo 9 MR share this trait? Or can you still get a manual transmission?
Thanks guys

IX comes in cloth, leather and only manual transmission. The six speed is only available in the MR. It's also the Achilles heel of the CT9A platform.

All Mitsubishi Evolution IX's come in manual only, no matter the trim. Evolution IX's come only in manual, although in 5 speed or 6 speed manual. (6 speed in the MR model only.)
The only difference in an MR and the other Evo IX's are the 6 speed manual transmission and gauges. Everything else is almost the same. (I've owned both a regular IX and a IX MR.) Word of Caution: IX MR's manual transmissions have a tendency to "have more issues" than the 5 speed manual transmission. If you plan on tracking or drag racing your Evo IX, many people here have had thier MRs converted into a 5 speed due to the durability of the 5 speed.
Evolution IX's are deemed to be more "track" type cars when compared to the X's. The IX has more cabin noise and comes with alcantra and leather interior, unless you get the SSL (Sound, Sunroof, Leather) package. If you are looking for comfort, don't get a IX.
If you are looking for comfort, the X's have a less road noise, have a choice of paddle shifters or a manual gearbox.
In the end, if you are looking for luxury and comfort, you shouldn't be looking into an Evo.
But all this typing is for naught, for alas we have a "search" option as well. Peruse at your pleasure.

Sorry guys, im of the opinion that leather is more luxuriois than cloth. Thats all i meant by that.
Goals? Few bolts ons and having fun learning to tune.
May consider the non-MR is the 6spd is unreliable, and just buy MR seats for the leather.
Thanks

Its not that the 6 speed is unreliable, but for daily driving and if you going to work/school/pleasure and romp on it *once in a while* the 6 speed is going to be fine, no issues whatsoever.
However if you plan on DRAG RACING / TRACKING / GOING OVER 500 HP, then yes, I would suggest that you get a 5 speed transmission. I have over 92k on my MR 6 speed transmission and I just daily drive it with a "once in a while" pull beat a ricer half to death, but my 6 speed is still good. No problems.
What it really comes down is your driving style. Me, I take care of my stuff, but I use it in moderation as well.
I went for the GSR with the SE package.
Five speed.
Zero lift kit (aerodynamics), often called the "SE lip" by enthusiasts.
Aluminum roof.
Recaro leather/alcantara seats.
HID headlights.
The down sides?
GSR trim mediocre KYB shocks (You can pick-up the MR Bilsteins for cheap from EvoM members).
No vortex generator.
The SE only comes in Silver, Grey and Black.
Four models were available in the US. All models used the same 286 hp (213 kW) engine.
Standard – revised 5-speed, standard model
RS – ralli sport, revised 5-speed, aluminum roof, gauge pack, minimal interior, also no radio
SE – Special Edition, aluminum roof/hood, and front fenders, split seven-spoke forged aluminum BBS wheels in "diamond black" finish, HID headlights with integrated fog lights, red-stitched Recaro seats
MR – 6-speed, Bilstein monotube shocks, split seven-spoke forged aluminum BBS wheels, aluminum roof, hood, and front fenders, gauge pack, HID headlights with integrated fog lights, vortex generator, front brake cooling ducts and custom MR badging.
All of the American models are the same in power, but may differ in performance. The only thing that sets them apart is the Evo RS, which is 80 lb (36 kg) lighter than the MR and SE models.
To the standard model, the Sun, Sound and Leather package added a power sunroof, HID xenon headlamps with integrated fog lights, a slightly different stereo headunit (with no integral amplifier), slightly upgraded speakers in the front doors and parcel shelf, a 4.1-channel amplifier under the driver's seat, a powered, trunk-mounted Infinity subwoofer, black leather seating surfaces, leather-trimmed door panels, slightly revised center armrests in the front and rear, and separate rear side headrests. This model deleted the GSR's headliner-mounted sunglass holder to make room for the sunroof

^ Now that the above post took care of the seats question. I'll respond to the MR Transmission issue.

The biggest issue with the six speed is fourth gear. Both transmissions (5/6) use the same size bell housing.
Mitsubishi thought it would be a good idea to just make the gears smaller to fit...

Heat soak is what kills the transmission in the six speed. If you're not doing anything to really heat-up the transmission, you will probably have no issues with fourth gear.

Thanks again for the information. I really like those SSL seats, HIDs would also he nice as my M has them.
Does the sunroof add a substantial amount of weight? I know many guys with bmws take them out and put in a CF insert (mostly just track guys)

Silly Rabbit Evos are for men.....
evos 8/9 only come in manual, you might want to consider a non MR evo. they have strong a 5spd tranny, only downside as everyone says is the interior there is no "Luxury' feeling driving an evo, you just get straight raw feeling performance.

You can "romp on it" all the time with the 6 speed. I have for many many years. I don't track my car on a road course though.
In my opinion, I would never ever get the leather seats in the Evo. I have rode in an Evo with the SSL package and was very disappointed. They are not like the leather seats that come in the BMW's. They do not hold you in the seat at all and are really nothing special. The sunroof is tiny, and once again in my opinion, not worth it at all. Many Evo's I have seen with the sunroof have slight buckling in the roof near the glass which again is not desirable.

If you just want to daily drive, then get a IX MR. I have a IX MR and its my daily and I love it.
In the near future I plan on making it my track car and getting a 5 speed conversion.
The 6 speed is good, 5 speed is better at taking abuse..AutoX, Drag, etc.
Dont worry too much about trims, you can mod the car however you want, tons of awesome aftermarket parts..seats, gauges, etc....
Whatever tickles your pickle, someone out there has something for you.
Biggest thing to consider....is what color you want. Everything else is an after thought.
Have fun man, and good luck. Hope you make the transition.

2nd Gear Transmission synchro seems to be weaker inthe MR 6 speed transmissions. Been reading about that forever. =/ Or maybe people just do too many pulls in 2nd gear with the 6 speed transmissions........ who knows. *shrug*
