Introduction and question.

Whats up everyone. First off, let me say that Im a new owner of a silver 2003 evo 8. Super stoked to get to know you guys and those that live around me (Watertown/Syracuse area of NY.) At any rate, i ditched my previous car, a 2001 Honda S2000, for the Evo for all the obvious reasons and i couldnt be happier.

Now, the secondary part of my post. Im having a problem with idling. Now, im told that the car should NOT be ilding at around 750-800 rpms like its doing now. On top of that, while driving, if i put it in to neutral when driving for a time, it likes to drop to around 200 rpm like its about to die but saves itself. On a number of ocasions it actually had died. So this being my first FI vehicle ever, im wondering if the tune is off. I've also been told it could be the MAF or something like that.

To note, my current modifiation are as follows; 3" catback exhaust, stage 2 transfer case, HKS intake. I can only assume that it has an upgraded clutch as well.

At any rate, if you guys have ideas or have had the same problem hit me up and it would be greatly appreciated. Also let me know of fellow evo owners around.

Thanks, D.

Stock blow off valve/diverter valve?

I'd begin checking vacuum lines for leaks (cracks or pinholes) and making sure the intercooler piping are secure. Boost leak tester can be had for $30 on ebay and will net you some HP and a smoother running ride if you find any serious leaks.

Hey mate, as above I would check for Vacuum leaks along all your hoses and IC piping. It wouldn't hurt to clean your MAF as well, If your HKS induction kit replaces your standard intake pipe that can sometimes cause dramas. Does it ever fail or backfire and bog down when you drive it hard? If so it could also be a plug or coil pack. If it drives fine all the time except when idling it is most likely the vacuum leak or could even be a stick Idle Speed Contoleer motor, you can fix that by spraying throttle body cleaner into the throttle body with the motor running. Let us all knoe how it goes mate, best of luck.

Yea, I forgot to mention that I do have an aftermarket Tial BOV. There are no back fires and it does bog down sometimes but I think that due to me still learning to drive the car. (Im having an issue with it for some reason. Probably cause I might actually be a ****ty driver )But the vehicle drives just fine, except for when idling and going in to neutral after speeds higher than 40mph. Can I get TB cleaner at any parts stores or would it be best to get it online. And since I am a newb, were can I find the MAF sensor? And will a boost leak test be the best way to see if there are leaks in my vacuum lines?

Thanks, D

Is your Blow off Valve a Vent to Air type? That's the one that makes a loud Tssshhh noise when you change gears. If it is it can cause idling problems and sometimes cause you to stall when you back off the after giving it a quick stab, or can cause your revs to drop badly and your car to sometimes stall when you clutch in and drop it into neutral. It can also cause you to bog down after gear changes.

I woudn't worry about the TB cleaner yet, you can get MAF cleaner from any auto store, your MAF if the plastic tube with a box on top the is between your Pod Filter and Intake pipe, It will have some wires connected to it and a sticker with a part number on top, you cant miss it. Follow the instructions on the Cleaner can, just be very gentle with it and don't go sticking anything inside it.

Do you have a boost gauge?

The BOV is, if it is as you describe, a vent to air BOV. Would be in my best interest to get a different one? And I will try to get some MAF cleaner, but Im on the back end of a surgery that has crippled me momentarily. Im trying to get out of the house though. And no, I do not have a boost gauge.

I have just had 3 shoulder reconstructions (thanks army) in 12 months I know what you mean lol. Yeah that type of BOV can cause your issues with Idling and stalling, It has made me stall once before. If you have an original one and the know how to replace it, try that and see if it sorts your problem out, if not then try other things but it couldn't hurt to start there. Does it have any screws or anything on it that look like you can adjust them?
