Maybe it's not the downpipe that would cause the CEL, what about the replacement of the testpipe? Would that cause a CEL?
Yes, running a test pipe without the o2 delete mod in the ECU or not using an anti-fouler will cause the CEL to come on.

You sir made me feel so much better about myself.
Next question,
my car sounds like it's going in reverse...when it's going forward. That whiny sound.
It doesn't make it idling though, which leads me to believe...gearbox?

ok everyone that just posted that the AMS catback just bolts up is WRONG. the AMS catback has a 3 bolt flange. it will ONLY work with AMS cat, AMS test pipe or a custom 3 bolt flange. you cannot mix and match ams stuff. it only works with itself since its all 3 bolt flange vs everything else is 2 bolt.

i found the noise to be common in 1st gear.

U sir are correct. The ams has its own flange type. Im not positive but most other places use the 2 bolt flange. And yes if u go catless on a 8 u will havr a cel. Just go into ecu flash and delete it. Welcome to the forums op

Search evo death whine on YouTube. Is that the sound?

First gear whine is completely normal. If I remember right, evos first gear is straight cut, just like reverse. Which is why they sound similar. Also if you have lifter tick that bad possibly you already have a mild cam and they didn't bleed the lifters. My evo has 274 cams and you can hardly tell it's cammed with basically 0 lifter tick. Bleeding helps alot.

I am pretty sure they offer just the catback with an adapter to mate up to other 2 bolt flanges. Out of all the exhausts I have ran and seen it is by far my favorite other than going fully custom. Call them to make sure before ordering though.

I'm so lost to the world of Evos...I've been reading all night, and I still feel like I know absalutely nothing.
Ok, I got you, you didn't have the car yet. Don't be intimidated by the 4G63, it's so simple, even I can tell you a thing or two. That's the beauty of it. so much more room to work, so much simpler. There's only one cat but you should have a working O2 sensor in your O2 housing. I THINK the 8 doesn't have the O2 sensor that my 9 has in the cat.

You need to start with Modding your car $100 at a time.

there ARE things in there I don't agree with. They don't tell you that you might have hellacious dash rattle with the hard motor mounts. I guess I'm sposed to know that. I do now. the ebay short shifter? **** that. you have to cut the plastic housing of the stock shifter to get it to work and for some reason they don't tell you that. Just get a works or something nice. don't cheap out on critical interface parts. if you upgrade your intercooler... get the 3.8 garrett core AT LEAST. Get the Perrin intake, if you don't want the oiled filter replace their filter with the Amsoil dry filter.

check out my mod thread for the original plan, the changes, the result, the mistakes made, the lessons learned and the details. check out the dyno results threads for other peoples results.

read. and read. and read. and take your time. DO NOT RUSH IT. if you have access to a reputable Evo specialist then plan your upgrade path with them from the beginning.

good luck.

Not sure if you purchased an exhaust or not. But we offer an exhaust that is a direct replacement and will hook up toe the factory catalytic converter no problem. If you plan on eliminating the converter we can extend the catback to a downpipe back and connect directly to the downpipe eliminating the factory cat section, or we can build a test pipe if you plan on putting the cat in for emissions, etc.

One of the best mods to get for this vehicle is a lower intercooler pipe, this mod gives you around a 12-15whp gain and improved throttle response.

Thanks!

Michael
