Evo 8 or 9 as first car at 16?
Sorry pal,
I know that everyone telling you to not go for it is probably discouraging, but I am with them. An evo isn't really meant for a younger guy. Do yourself a favor, buy an Integra GSR, Civic Si, Nissan 240sx etc. Just make sure its a 5 speed! ha! those smaller cars are actually a lot of fun. (to this day my daily is my Integra!) It well give you a good understanding of how to drive and then put some money into the performance of it! Get that modification itch and learn through personal experience what a car is capable of. Everyone starts somewhere, and 16 is a great age, I remember when I was that old all I wanted in life a Mitsu Eclipse GS-T. Guess what, my senior year in high school I had worked long enough to afford one, I then rolled it on new years eve 3 months later. You might not be as lucky as I was and walk away from it.
Bottom line is that you have a lot of life ahead of you, learn for yourself what you like and want to accomplish. And like everyone else is saying, Evos are pretty expensive. I am 22 now and have graduated from school and have a career job now. My car payments alone are $500 a month with an additional $100 per month for insurance.

I totally agree with everyone else here. An Evo is a HORRIBLE car for a young person. The cost is ruinous at minimum wage, the insurance is ludicrous, and your chances of totalling it or getting yourself killed are so high. Get something small and fun without a ton of power that you can learn to drive with.
Owned my evo since I was 18, i'm in the military and had the car for 6 years so far, had a 95 prelude for 6 months before the evo. Respect the car, don't be stupid, most importantly <3 your car. I'd suggest taking a high speed driving course at a track to know the limits of your car. Do it if you can afford it.
My first car was an evo when I turned 18. You definitely have to respect the car, and be mature enough to realize what you have. Good luck with whichever way you decide to go, and most importantly be safe
If you were my son, you'd be in a 5,000 lb SUV with the best safety ratings possible
You'd also be on the track in a 944, Miata or Integra learning how to drive properly so when you got your high-performance car (Evo or whatever) you'd have the necessary skills, and just as importantly, the necessary respect of what the car can do.
Plenty of time for an Evo; as a beginning driver no need to rush into anything that can kill you.

Well said!
Thats really sad, I cant imagine how the driver is feeling right now. The only advise for the OP is if you do get it BE responsible, obey speed limits, and if you feel the need for speed GO to a track! It doesnt matter if youre an A student or youre Michael Schumacher you can still get involved in an accident.
OP, look for another car. Seriously.
Hate to jump on the band wagon but everyone here is right. Save yourself now and get something else (4cyl 5speed). My first car before the evo was a 95 saturn, I learned sooooo much about driving and car control from going out in the boonies and playing with the car. However, if I would of had the evo instead I would have killed myself and the car, no doubt in my mind. Teaching myself about driving and car respect put me in a much better position to have my evo. And as already said your pretty much guaranteed to have the car messed with/destroyed taking it to highschool.
My overall advice: Go to college, get a nice paying career. Then worry about your performance dream car. Untill then it's not worth it.

I can't believe parents who get their high school newly licensed kid a car like an evo. Doesn't seem smart. OP, no offense, but please get a car that is reasonable for a 16 year old. I got a scion tc when I started college years ago, looks nice, fairly fun (if get 5 speed, I had a 4 speed auto, sucked) and a lot of mods for it.

If you have to ask people if you should do something, then you probably shouldn't do it.
My take: Don't.. not just because your 16, but if you don't know what to look for in a used Evo, if you end up getting stiffed on daily beaten evo and break something, you're basically screwed financially..

I'd say get an SRT4 and bang gears in it. Mod the crap out of it and blow it up. When that happens you can buy another one for under 10k and do it all over again. Cheap on gas low insurance. You obviously got some sense in your head if you can do good in school, pretty much comes down to being responsible. An evo is a pretty big responsibility both financially and mechanically. You don't want a car you cant drive
