Hello Everyone , Switching from STi to Evo
Hello Everyone , Switching from STi to Evo
Hello
I have recently decided to sell my STi and purchase an Evo due to the fact that making over 300 whp on an STi is not worth the hassle. I really love the car but i just want something that I will not have to worry about pushing over 300 whp.
I have decided on two routes
1. Buy a Evo 8 with a Six speed (70k miles) for 16-17k and is in great condition.
Or
2. Buy a high mileage Evo for Sub 15k and plan on a shortblock / Transmission replacement in the future.
Advice or Input ?

I agree... Stay away from the 6 speeds... 15k for a high mileage Evo? That's crazy! What model is the high mileage car? If it's an 8 its not worth more than 12-13k in excellent condition depending on the mileage.
Is this true ?
At one point I thought someone had come up with a fix with the weak gears in the 6 speed anyways. Couldnt you just build the tranny if you wanted.

This is just a average guess from what people are saying. I mean it obviously has some varying differences. I'd say if you never aim to go higher than 400whp than a 6 speed is a possibility.

If by track days you're referring to 20-minute lapping sessions and the like, then you've just defined the leading and almost solitary cause of 6-speed failures. The transmission overheats and 4th can fail.
Thanks
I was also wondering about the lifespan of the 4g63 , would 50-80k miles be considered a lot of miles ?
I ask this because on Stis anything above 80k is a ticking time bomb if the boost is not stock.
What kind of lifespan do these motors have and I would assume it is also highly influenced by who is tuning it.

I've seen evo get to around 150k on the original engine. You build the engine strong and take care of it and its a very strong reliable engine. Its just everything else around the engine that sucks lol
I know that the transfer case is a weak spot and that the interior is not fantastic.
Is there anything else I should look into ?
