Noob here looking at a Evo-9 (possibly)

Alright guys I have been in a 04 wrx ever since 2007 and have loved subies. This spring I am thinking about either staying in my roots lol and looking for a 04-06 sti OR looking for a Evo 9. But I dont really know that much about them besides this......
-Looking for a Evo9...dont really know the years though (what yrs were they produced?
-Not looking for a MR.....heard bad things about the 6spd and the 5spd is stronger.
-I have heard the t-case/transfer gears are weak in these cars......and Shep is the guy to go to, how much would a built t-case run?
-I know they can be highly modded with the 4g63, BUT do these motors have any short coming?
-What are the differences between the GSR and SE models?
-And what colors did the Evo9's come in?
All I know of
white
black
charcoal
bluish/purple <---love this color
red

Any tid bits will all be very helpful.....thanks fellas.

The IX was only available in 2006 model in the US.

That's true. The 5 speed can handle more power usually.

It's weak when doing a bunch of 5.5k clutch dumps, not weak to where you would need to build it right out of the gate. Hell, some people have countless launches on their own t-cases. It's all how you launch.

The 4g63 is seriously impressive in terms of how much power it can make without ever even opening it up. With the right tuner, I don't see any real short comings in moderate power levels (under 500 hp/400tq) (although someone else should elaborate on this one )

The IX came in the normal evo colors. Graphite Grey, wicked white , rally red, tarmac black , apex silver, electric blue. (And lightning yellow ?)

I see, I see......and |I live in SE Michigan so AMS and Buscher are both a few hrs away from me, so I would probably go there for a tune. So the 9 only had 1 yr of production?......well thats disapointing, and will make the search harder lol

What were the years of the 8 and was one yr better than the rest? I heard the 9 had a better turbo......any other upgrades the 9 had over the 8's?

unless your really looking for a 9 the 8s are just as good so that could open your search up a bit and may be even a little easier on your wallet. In terms of power and short comings there really are none unless your trying to hit massive numbers on a stock motor.. youll deff have alot more short coming with an sti.. 5 speed is stronger then 6 speeds when it comes to the 9s but its really all on how your drive it.. as far as the colors those are about it but for an 8 they have yellow as well.

evo 8 was 2003-05, it has a stronger t case then the 9 but the 9 has a mivec motor, bigger turbo, black suede interior and a couple different exterior features. yes the 9 was only 06 which makes it harder to find and every one wants over book value so good luck on that. search

Any particular reason for a 9 over an 8? As you see above they are very very similar.

9's are much more $$$ up front as they were only made for one year.

If I was buying a car to keep stock and put in a garage; Evo IX all the way
If I was buying a car to toy with and drive the crap out of; Evo XIII, just so I wouldn't feel bad lol
