Safe WHP/WTQ for IX 5spd?

I'm starting to look into purchasing my first Evo, but am a bit concerned about the strenght of the 5spd transmission. I have heard it is stronger than the 6spd, but by how much? Based upon your experiences what seems to be safe power numbers? I'd be probably looking for no more than 450whp in the long run. Also I did a search, but it was mainly stuff 5spd vs 6 stuff, I don't think I'm interested in an MR. It would be great if some members could tell me their power levels and how their tranny is holding up to higher numbers without a shep rebuild. Thanks!

What type of driving are we talking here? Constant drag strips and launching?

Stock 5 spd gear box with 450whp is fine for daily driving and track, but you will need a clutch upgrade.

Whatever you want to throw at it as long as you know how to drive 450 is no problem IMO

Maybe several drag passes a summer, mainly just some spirted driving, not used as a daily. But would 340-380whp be more than fine I'm assuming, since thats what I'd start with when I buy the car.

The stock 5spd will handle anything you throw at it, but like others have said, as long as you know how to drive it.

as stated above it can handle any number the problem comes when you cant drive right or you start powershifting etc then there goes your tranny ready for a rebuild. But with a built tranny you have total peace of mind and there not bad expensive

Strictly modified
Buschur Buswhacker
Shep

if you have 1500 you can get it done now by any of those companies besides buying a used evo YOU NEVER KNOW HOW IT WAS DRIVEN prior to you so tranny could be on its way out for all you know or clutch as well

Thanks for the information guys! I'd like to find one stock or basic upgrades(tbe, mbc, licp, 02 housing, etc) with under 40k miles. Don't get me wrong I do love my STi, but it is just so hard to make good numbers without building the engine, I've been on here lurking around for a while and have seen plenty of 500whp stock block Evos.

its not the hp you need to worry about its the Tq they are making. stock block is cool but it has its limits

As does anything, I hear you want to keep the tq around or below 400 for best results on stock bottom end. But I'd be plenty happy with bolt-ons, cams, and a good tune, I hear its possible to yeild 350+whp from that setup, and maybe down the road I could get a FP red, and some injectors and be at or more than 400!

I'm in the same boat as you right now. But I won't be able to switch over to an evo for a couple of years, so i'll just keep lurking in the shadows and hopefully I'll be able to find a decent 05-06 gsr... although i doubt it

Are you a member on IWSTI? and yeah, I'd defintely want under 40k miles and it needs to be an IX, either SSL, or SE. The STi is a great car but I want some more power and want to try something new but similar car.

Yes I am, my name on there is Stijoe. But I feel the same way, the STi is a great daily driver, but I would never want to go through the expensive nightmare of building one. And I want to track my car in the future, and the evo has many advantages there too.
