New Member - Potential Buyer - Some Questions

Hi everyone.

I'll try to keep this brief. I'm a Honda guy. Have been for about 12 years now since I was 18. I had a 00 Type-R, 99 GSR, and 95 fully built boosted LS.

The boost ruined my life.

With a mean street setup, I got 330 whp 290 wtq out of that car. The engine was forged and sleeved. Sold it and it is now running the same setup with a few tweaks and is around 500 whp. Really regret selling that car.

With that said...the turbo completely ruined my view of a fast car....I got an 07 Civic SI....which was nice, but you guessed it....slow....

So a few months ago I decided to get back into the game...bought a Supersonic Blue Pearl 99 GSR with the intent of going crazy boost again.

So yesterday I got to thinking....I'm 31 now...the integra is sort of a "kid's car"...and I've done a fast one before...I haven't started the build on the GSR yet so I am in limbo.

I did some reading around these forums....one thing I am concerned about is the daily drive ability of the EvoX. I see a lot of people saying it has a stiff suspension. I would NEVER DD my integra...it's already lowered on coilovers and is stiff as hell. I have an 08 TSX for my DD...but if I go the EVO X route, the TSX will be traded in.

I am just wondering if anyone here has had a nicely built Honda and went to the Evo X....and their experience.

My wife's car is a 06 Acura RL....AWD and I absolutely love that. Completely different beast, I know, but the AWD is great.

Thanks for any info or opinions!

First off, welcome to the club.

Secondly, I'm assuming you mean a 09 GSR?

I have owned multiple DSM's in my time, both 2g turbo eclipses, I have owned a 240sx with sr20 swap (built to drift, horrible ride quality.) I have also owned a 08 honda civic si coupe and a bunch of misc cars in that time (multiple hondas, toyotas, nissans, fords, etc...)

I now have a evo 8, evo x, and hyundai elantra. My opinion on the evo x is that it is definitely a very DD friendly, many of the people I know whom are also on this forum drive their evo's all year round, and Ohio's weather can be interesting. The evo x rides very well for the type of vehicle that it is, and if I had to, I wouldn't hesitate to daily drive mine.

Many people have pretty heavily modified evo's on the forum who also daily drive their vehicles. All in all, you can't go wrong buying one, now obviously the reliability of a honda is definitely a little higher than a mitsubishi (don't flame for this guys, I have to say its true from my experience,) but driving a evo will definitely put a smile on your face and depending on what you do with it, still going to be a very reliable car.

I would be an 10-12 GSR, yeah.

Yeah, I hear ya on the reliability thing....I understand the more you modify the more it affects reliability. And I know I'm sacrificing the reliability you get from Honda for something more upscale (Really, besides *maybe* Toyota, nothing really beats a Honda when it comes to reliability)

I know at the very least I would do the bolt ons and tune....but with boost, you're never satisfied and you're never happy, lol, so I'm sure I'd keep upgrading.

No, I think he did mean a 99 GSR (though it's confusing, as I assume he was referring to an Integra GS-R and not an Evo X GSR, especially since they didn't exactly have 2009 models in the US), assuming that was what you referring to.

If you're concerned about suspensions, the stock Evo X suspension is pretty easy to DD, especially if you're coming from the Honda camp with lowered suspensions. Additionally, it already handles pretty well, so it's not necessary to throw on coils unless you're doing some serious track stuff. But even some springs or something don't affect it too bad. (We're close in age, and I also came from the Honda camp many years, and mine went through a set of Tenzo R springs and then later Skunk2 coilovers, and both make my Evo IX, which feels stiffer than an Evo X, feel quite comfortable in comparison.)

Not much out there is as reliable as a Honda, but the Evo has proven to be pretty reliable and can handle a good amount of boost without deteriorating its lifespan unless you go crazy (which it sounds like you might do, but it's still going to deal with it better than a lot of other cars would). Look up 4RETECH, he has a 400+ whp Evo VIII that has well over 300k miles.

Hahah, sorry guys. I have a 98 GSR - as in the integra.

I'd be getting a 10-12 Evo GSR.

I don't think I'd go "crazy" per se, but I would like 400 to 450 whp. Yeah, I think anything would be less stiff than coilovers on a 2600 lb car....they are backbreakers.

Ahh yes, completely didn't think he was referring to an integra for some reason. I personally love the Evo 9, but because they were a rare breed they tend to hold their value. Some used 9's cost more than some X's. The prices for the 8's have come down quite a bit. I would test drive and research. The ultimate purchase is up to you, but if you take care of the car then the car will take care of you.
