i had a built 08 sti that was making 484 whp on a rotated gt35r turbo from p and l motorsports. I wouldnt say i over built the car but it was pretty stout. Just about everything was done including cams and a built tranny. I would strongly advise if this car is a daily driver do not build the car more then what you already have. So many problems arise at that power level. Its not reliable and its not fun. I loathed the car. Lucky for me it caught on fire and insurance gave me a lot of money.

Dont let that confuse you though. Stick with your car and just get drop in pistons done. Thats super cheap and as long as your block is good they wont have to crack the block halves. Also maybe get an act clutch done while the engine is out. After that your looking at 4k for labor and parts. And you will have a really fun car to drive that is reliable. Im sure you have seen builds on iwsti, ask those guys too.

Now with that being said the evo is great and i bought one cause it does things better then the sti does. but the sti was better in other aspects too. The things the evo does better was what i wanted though.

I've seen a few of your vids.

My brother made the switch from essentially a 300awhp 318awtq 2012 WRX to avoid the ringland failure. The only thing he misses is the subie rumble.

So personally, yes I'd get the X.

keep the STI...you already have it...youre used to it!!! you have a 2.5...more torque than our 2.0.....you dont have adjustable cams and everything but seriously these cars are pretty similar.....

take a thousand of your pocket....buy..pistons,rods gasket bla bla bla.....do it on the weekend with your friend......by the time youre there port the end(youll have it in the hands) ...ounce built....crank the boost A LOTTTTTTTT....youre on E85 so more timing too due to the porting job!! boom max 1500$ youll be having a beast!!!

For a stock, daily, I think the subie will be more comfortable.

that being said, you already own your subie, you already have a ton of mod $ in it, might make more sense to build, financially speaking.

if the money isnt a deciding factor, go evo and never look bacl.
I've been looking at EVO's all day everyday since I made this thread - they are consuming my life! I want one so badly but just feel that I am already to far into my car. I really want to go look at it in person again and see how I feel about it and maybe test drive a used one if they have any in stock.

(leather recaro seats, nice lighting/hids and a sunroof) I also like how the car feels and I believe it's great for dialy driver. I will always have respect for subies but if you are going to mod you car, evo x can handle some good power reliably. (just make sure to go to a good tuner)

If you can take a hit on your wallet - get an evo (since you will have to sell all your sti parts or possibly trade in)

If you want to save money - build your sti

Btw, i've seen your videos before and your STI looks hella clean!
Thanks for the support man! I was actually looking at a 2012 Wicked White GSR with the SSS as well when I was waiting for the 2013 STI's to be released. I was really close to pulling the trigger but wasn't aware of ringland failure and also preferred the looks of the interior and exterior of the STI. I want more of a hardcore performance car which is why I am looking at the EVO, and the fact and I can spend a lot less money to have an even faster car than I already have!

I've already been lurking around people's builds but I will certainly continue to do so

Wow, that's pretty interesting. I am shooting for either 450 or 500awhp if I build the STI. I was planning on doing a sleeved 2.5L with head work but due to time constraints, I am going to have to do a more basic build with forged internals, bearings, head studs, etc. I have been told that that should be reliable but who knows. The other issue is that once I build the STI, assuming that I do, I do not want to have to do another rebuild anytime soon.

Sweet! Yeah I went with equal length headers when I finished off my bolt-on's and the rumble is awesome but I don't miss it too much :P

As I said before in my response, I was quoted roughly 6k for a rebuild through COBB which would be full forged internals with bearings, head studs, etc. If I were to drop in a clutch, that would bump me up to 7700 and if I were to do head work, I am at 9200 plus a longer wait time. It just seems like the money keeps adding up with this car when I could already be at 400awhp with an EVO and probably be faster than a 400awhp STI which is frustrating. I am really on the fence about building it or not but I plan to look at EVO's this week once again and hopefully that will help make my decision.

I know your sti is at a good start an most people are saying run with it. I think if you really want the better performer, start over with the evo. You'll have a more powerful/ more reliable car in the end which handles better and IMO looks better.

Man to get to that power level in the sti and be reliable you are looking at a butt load of money. Not just the parts but the tune is equally important at that level. What I learned from my experience with that much power it was stupid. Didn't make it that much more fun. The car was a nightmare to drive. Injectors and cams killed the idle. The tranny was rough. The power you have now should be fun enough. What are you looking to do. If you want butt loads of power buy a used corvette. I'm not trying to be preachy but think of the money your going to be spending. Then think of what you could buy with that money.

Does the 2013 have a solid tranny or do you need to also source the hawkeye tranny since they held up the best.

No offense but an sti for 40k is a waste of money, the factory tune is junk, the stock turbo is junk, the stock motor is junk, and the car is eco. The car has very little potential without dumping a **** load of money into it. Better off with a evo x or gtr!

Get the EVO. After you get it modded comparably to your STI, you won't miss it at all. Plus STI's are a dime a dozen compared to EVO's, at least where I live.

I just sold my 2011 wrx sedan limited fully loaded and picked up a 2006 Evo MR.

Now I mention the fully loaded limited because at that price point I was 1k off of a base Sti hatch.

Going into the purchase I was well aware of the ringland issues but still wanted a fun vehicle with creature comforts (heated everything, bluetooth, leather, HIDs, etc...).

Ultimately my decision to go to an Evo was because I wanted to get back to a more performance oriented vehicle. Yes the wrx/sti can be that but at a much higher cost and with less reliability.

If I were in your shoes I'd throw in some pistons for peace of mind and wait a year or two to see what comes out. I'm unaware of what Mitsu has in store but I do know that if the new wrx/sti looks anything close to the concept and has a boosted version of the FA20, I'll probably jump back. So far I've read great things about the FA20 engine and am excited to see what will come from (but am fine waiting out it's freshman and sophomore years).

In the meantime I'm thoroughly enjoying the Evo.

I guess the grass is greener...

I went from a 03 Evo 8 to a 08 Evo X. I always felt I should have gotten an 08 STi because I've been getting away from the track, modding, and car scene in general.

Anyways, fast forward, I purchased a BRZ this year and have been getting the itch to get back into cars. Now i'm looking to turn my X into a weekend warrior .

Anyways, I was close to trading in my X for a hatch STi but the ringland failure issue has kept me away.

Beyond making power in the X. Just driving it around a corner is SO damn fun! Best of luck to you with whatever you choose!

I'm in SoCal to and my X is very lightly modded, hit me up if you ever want to check it out.
