Rev Limits

Noob here. I just bought a used Evo 2003 (GSR I believe).

I was trying to rev past 3000 in first gear, but the car sputters back and forth like it's dying. Is this normal??!

If so is there a rev limit for each gear?

A friend drove it and it felt perfectly fine, part of it is because I'm noob to stick too.

IIRC, 03/04 Evo's didn't have the "2-Step" rev limiter if that's what you were asking.

Don't know what you mean by it being too rich.

I don't know what a 2-step rev limiter is. I was trying to find any relevant information, but don't know any relevant terms. My friend recommended not to rev past 2500-3000, but never knew that there is a "lower-max" limit depending on the gear (if there is such thing).

Not rev past 3K? Why's that? The 2-Step thing I'm talking about is on 05+ Evo's. If you put it in first, press the clutch and rev to 5.5K it bounces there imitating a 2 step in order to launch. But rereading your post, that's irrelevant to what you asked.

So does the Stationary Rev limit prevent you from reving you're car past a certain amount in first gear?

My question really is what happens when you try to rev it past the limit when its on? Does jerk back and forth if you do so?

Does this happen while moving or when the car is still and you rev it to 3K?

Happens while moving in first gear and bring it above 2500-3000. The upper gears feel fine, its just first.

Okay here are the motions

1. Complete stop
2. Accelerate out of stop at around 1000 rpm on 1st gear
3. Press gas to rev up to 2000 rpm, still on 1st gear
4. Reving up a little more to 2500-3000 on 1st gear (At this point the car starts jerking back and forth, at this point i'm scared to accelerate anymore, so i switch to 2nd. Its fine at 2nd and so on. I can rev past 2500 on the higher gears)

Maybe motor mount related?

Edit: Or not since it's only first gear. :/

Or boost leak related also.

I also had my car in limp mode once to do some work and forgot to turn it off. Car wouldnt go over 2k in any gear so I guess thats ruled out

I doubt it's boost leak related because the boost sounds/feels fine in 2nd and up.
