Needing help with gauges
Needing help with gauges
I just purchased a 2005 Evo 8 and it does not have any real work done to it (just an arc airbox, and some suspension work).
I am going to be purchasing three AEM gauges, I was thinking boost, AFR, and coolant temp. Are these a good choice? Or should I get something besides the coolant temp. I know I want the AFR and boost.
Also, with this car having all stock piping, where do I install the sensors for these gauges?
Please and thanks from a new guy!

What does the piping have to do with anything? Its easy to install gauges dude, tap into the fuse box hot in run, ground, and sensor. Afr to downpipe, oil pressure to oil housing, and boost to vacuum source eg: manifold.
Does it matter which fuses? I heard for the AFR I want one that does not restart when cranking? The others don't matter?
hot in run(key on ignition) check with a test light, get some mini fuses with a pigtail from oreillys or autozone. The afr will restart unless its hot at all times with a switch but I dont see the point of it.
I like the way the cluster and three gauges look when you put it where the radio goes, PureDrive. And I don't know how I feel about that display. It's neat, just not my style.
Adriano, thanks for all the info! What's your opinion on which gauges? Should I go with something besides coolant temp?

I would get all the gauges you were talking about: boost, AFR, and coolant temp plus EGT (optional, but I like it) and Oil Pressure. The OEM water temp gauge is not that good. It will show overheat after you've been overheating.
I like the way that cluster looks too. The only problem, IMHO, is that you shouldn't be looking over there when driving, especially under WOT.

Most important are definitely boost, afr and oil pressure
I also opted to get fuel pressure and oil temp... but only because I made a custom gauge pod in the center vents and needed to fill in the void.
To be honest fuel pressure has saved me once already when I had the feed line rupture. Started noticing fuel pressure dropping. Pulled over and was lucky nothing caught fire.... fuel dripping on the alternator is not exactly safe
Below is my set-up, pics are on page 5 if interested

My only other two questions to you are; which fuse did you wire the AFR to? And where did you hook the sensor for fuel pressure, in the spot by the filter or in the block? I've seen both those questions on here, neither with a definite answer.
I saw that you have all AEM digitals, do you like them? That's what I am looking at.

I measured the wires and used a power supply with terminal 15 (power only when key on)
I installed the fuel pressure sensor into my fuel rail. The oil pressure and temp should be taken by the oil filter.
Hope that helps
Here are a couple of links that explain it best:
