My dad considering the EVO X MR
Ok so I talked to my father about the trunk space and it really annoys him... And honestly I understand him! Now I see that if you're clever you can get the new WRX STI for the same price and it has a TRUE TRUNK of 460l!!! Besides that it looks like it's a bot more performant and confortable... The only problem with the sub's being the lack of automatic option... What are the downsides to it compared to the Evo?
Ringlands,Head gaskets...If they used forged pistons in the boxer motor I would buy an sti.
I'm talking about this one:
And pleeeeeeeeeeeease stop with the "real man driver X, Y is for boys" thing...
I want a constructive opinion!
I know I'm in an Evo forum but I'm sure some of you will be honest enough to give me useful insight
I see. But he's talking about 04-09 models... And it's a just a video of a guy showing broken motor parts... Aren't those breakdowns offen caused by motor modifications? Is it really THAT bad? I mean... the car has a 5 year warranty anyway... And from what I can see on the internet it can be easily avoided by just servicing the car correctly.

It's still the same motor nothing has changed an no it's not a big deal it's minor.
Sti always will have a better tranny but EVOS always had better engines.

Are you talking about the episode where he compares the Evo X to the Hatchback WRX? Because we're really not talking about the same cars then...

I see, I've seen that new sti, and my opinion of it was that it's a big fat copy of evo, and works on a technologically lower level. For instance, I believe their version of yaw control just uses the brake system. But in all honesty it seems like a decent car, since they copied so many of the evo's traits...

The Scooby doesn't have that.
The X's AWC is nearly perfect. Unlike most traction controls that just modulate the four brakes, the EVO's will shift AWD drive to different wheels to keep the car in corners. But it will still let you hoon the back end around in close corners (similar to handbrake turns).
The Scooby doesn't have that.
And then there's the mill. The theory behind a boxer engine is to make an engine that can be mounted low to allow making a car with a lower CG.
So putting a boxer engine in the 2015 STi -- a copy of the EVO -- makes no sense.
Especially since Scooby fills the space above the engine with more hardware -- like the intercooler.
The EVO's intercooler is up front, where it gets airflow.
The Scooby's sits above the engine, and they have to put a big bird catcher on the hood to supply it with air .... when you're moving.
When sitting at traffic lights, the Scooby's top mounted intercooler gets heat soaked, and the engine management has to back off power (ignition timing) to avoid detonation (especially with Cali 92 octane).
Scooby's boxer has been developed past it's capabilities.
Rumor has it that Subaru is looking to replace it.
So if you want to go STi, wait for the upgrades.
With Mitsu dropping the EVO, and Scooby making the STi into an EVO clone, the STi may be the way to go in the future.
In five or ten years, Scooby might get the STi up to the performance the EVO X had in '08.

I did look at the STi before buying my EVO VIII, back in '03, when they were closer to each other. (Competitors in rallye.)
When the EVO IX came out, scooby made the STi a soggy hatchback.
With the 2015, Scooby is returning the STi to being a performance machine, but they're out of practice.

There were a few factors the EVO had over the STi back then.
But a deciding one was that, looking at an STi in the service bay, I asked the dealer to point out the thermostat.
He couldn't find it.

For 2014, I looked at the GTR, I looked at the 911, I looked at the Cayman.
And then I bought an EVO X MR for half the price of those others.

I didn't even look at the Scooby. It's not in the same category.
Put a blanket over the rear seats and you can toss your golf bag in there.

(I keep my spare coats in the back of the EVO. That way, I've never left the right coat at home.
And they protect the seat when I toss extra baggage in the back.)But if cargo and comfort trumps performance, look at the Merc CLA45 AMG or BMW M235i.
The Merc won't handle corners like the EVO, but it has a bigger trunk and a more powerful mill. And it's more expensive.
The M235i reportedly handles better than the Merc, but I haven't found any reports on its trunk space.
As I Said before, we DONT buy German cars. It may not be the case where you live but here in switzerland they are much more expensive to buy and maintain... And if you look at reliability ratings, BMW is rubbish. On top of that, we dont want a coupe and the 235 only comes in coupe version here... And is ugly.
On the Evo X vs WRX sti thing I do agree its a real shame the WRX doesnt have an auto version... People driving the auto Evo seem to be very satisfied with it...
As much as I find your technical description of the subs downsides interesting... I dont get It!
How does It make the WRX worse than the Evo?

i'll chime in (just turned 44, but have the mind of a 21 year old
)
i've had my MR as a daily driver for 3 years. the trunk is not a problem - fits groceries just fine, back seat also if necessary.
i don't take it on vacations loaded up with luggage, however. if i need to make a large purchase, i use my wife's SUV. its not too often i'm out in the EVO and decide i really need to buy a refrigerator or patio furniture.
this is the first car i've ever owned that i did not replace the head unit or speakers. the audio is excellent when the EQ is set up.
i've loaded some CD's on the HD, but don't use it much. i mainly use a DVD burned with MP3's (did it with Roxio software on my PC - added sweet EVO pics for the screens!), and my iPod.

the EVO is a great daily driver - the backseat is roomier and has more legroom than my Subaru Legacy GT did, it goes anywhere in the winter with snow tires, and more importantly, is FUN to drive to work (or wherever) everyday even after several years of ownership.
if your dad can live with the seats and smaller-than-usual trunk, he will love it.

For example, you talk about a technology that makes the Evo corner better... But what I see on the internet is that the WRX STI seems to corner even better than the Evo (getting 0.98g of lateral acceleration). Or maybe I am missing something?

Well, the EVO isn't exactly a beauty queen.
Worse gearbox, worse engine, worse cornering, worse intercooler.
But as long as you're not going anywhere ....
The STi might have good static skidpad numbers, but corners in the real world are another matter.
The poor Scooby was out of its league.
Yes, that was 2008, but Scooby has a lot of catching up to do, even with the new one.
(Still using that boxer engine and top mounted intercooler.)
And it was the EVO's AWC that let it beat out the more powerful 911 and purpose built Lotus.
Did you watch the European Rallye Championship, last year? (They ran it, months later, on US cable.)
There was one specially built Scooby in Group N, but there were hordes of EVO IXs and Xs, that only fell behind the specialty rallye cars when the goat tracks got too narrow for a full sized EVO to run sideways.
(Like the "killer B" era, they're going to hurt someone, running on stages too tight for the hardware.)
