My dad considering the EVO X MR

Hello guys!
My dad is considering to buy an EVO X to replace his Peugeot 407 V6 and the idea didn't even come from me

At first, when he told me he wanted to change his car I looked for the japanese (hence more reliable) equivalents: Honda Accord and Mazda 6. Don't get me wrong, the lancer EVO is pretty much my dream car but I know the ride is pretty harsch and that the interior doesn't look very "luxurious". But it turns out HE came back to me talking about the EVO X MR as a possibility! Apparently he doesn't care that much about having a little harscher ride if that means alot more performance and he doesn't care about having some stupid 1000$ wood in his interior. He just wants is to be partical to use! And MPG isn't a problem either as it won't be worse than his old Peugeot 407.Here in switzerland, the MR costs around 53k$ new and you can gave +2 years warranty (that makes 5 years) for an extra 1k. Compared to the WRX sti, that's 5k less (and the WRX sti doesn't have dual clutch automatic) and I'm not even talking about the German equivalent which are ~8k more expensive (people here loooove German cars! Hence the price difference...).

The only thing that is really blocking us is the trunk space.... I mean... less than 200l???? really??? Are there any easy ways to improve it?
Other from that, I'd like to know:
- Is it reliable?
- Is the entertainment system any pratical? I mean the Navigation system and the 40Gb HD. Can you put music on it with a USB key?
- Are there any downsides to this car I didn't think of?

Thank you for your time!

to answer your questions directly, yes its proven to be a very reliable car assuming he wont throw a ton of power at it without reinforcing the applicable parts. I personally like the navi system and have no real issues with it except that you can only put music on the HD from a cd and not a usb key or iPod...also if connected to an iPod/usb stick/mp3 player the seek time is pretty slow...delays when manually changing songs and such..no issues with playback just navigation is slow..but it works well and I hacked mine to watch dvd's while driving...with the leather, sound package and added sound dampening I've enjoyed a few road trips with her.
as far as downsides..you pretty much already know...its not the softest ride in the world but the X is a million times more livable than the previous versions

Yes the trunk space is absolutely horrible and it doesn't help you cannot lay the rear seats down due to the battery and washer fluid bottle being in the way. Don't think you are doing much to improve this other than have a spare car for long trips

As far as the nav goes, I'm not sure how the ones are overseas, but the one here in the states does not have the HD in it for the 2014 model year. It has an SD slot that you can put your own card into. It does have a USB connection in the glovebox as well.

Reliability is on par with other high end performance cars. As always it treats you as good as you treat it.

Downsides are really what everyone already knows. Harsh ride, plenty of road noise, pretty non luxurious cabin for a 40k car.

Once you get behind the wheel you stop caring about crap like that though, and start loving being the beast on the street.

Here in Europe, all 2014 MRs have that 40Gb HD Probably because people here tend to give more importance to "luxury" features

But wait... So you can connect a USB key but NOT transfer music from it into the HD?
We will probably test it on July (as soon as I finish my exams).

If you guys still have the nav with HD, then you will be able to store music on it.

Over here we have to store it on an SD card that goes in behind the nav unit.

Yep ^^^^ This

Have to admit though, I would have really liked to have the internal HD and maintenance/door setup features that are now gone from the new nav...

Your Dad would be the only evo owner in history with one of the trunks on his roof...

This is one of those things where you just overlook the lack of trunk space.

no trunk space is worth it for the rear strut bar we have...its a beefy one...and you can always use the back seats to store stuff...just not anything too long lol...transporting a lip sitting across my shoulder from the rear seat to the front was no fun haha

if you want trunk space, then you can get a ralliart. obviously not on the same performance level as a X MR but if you want a trunk that bad...

no he wouldn't. roof racks are very practical and I know yakima make one that is compatible with the evo x.

Only time you need a lot of trunk space is if you are also hauling a lot of passengers. most of the time the back seat is what I use primarily as a trunk, not gonna lie.
