newb to tuning - need help

first off let me start by saying thank you in advance.

so i am new to the evo world and new to tuning. but not new to cars. i went to school for automotive so i am familiar to most terminology etc....

i will say that i have read countless threads and guides on how to do tuning including merlins book!

ok the car

ROM ID 96530706
264 cams
dual valve springs and hardware
ported manifold
evo 9 tubo
external dump
ARP studs
exhaust
walbro 255
PTE 1200's
along with some other items

now i have wanted to undertake the challenge of tuning myself.

What i have done so far. downloaded save stock ROM.. did the tephra v7 with Speed Density. i am also wanting to eventually do the flexfuel patch which i have already installed on the def file

What has gone well.... i sucessfully installed and moved all info from stock over to the modded ROM.

The car starts and idles great. right at stoich. even drives(not going into boost) -- this is thanks to all the threads and similar install posts that i have read.

but here is where i think something has gone wrong......

i want to see how drastic things will change when modifying certain tables.
for example i went from commanded 14.5 to 10 in both my high and low octane table.
nothing changed the car is still sitting right a stoich....
i also has the similar results with timing.

Now i know this may be a stupid problem and easy fix but i have to be missing something simple. that or im thinking it may have something to do with the flex fuel patch that i have installed in the ROM.

and help here would be greatly appreciated. i want to learn how to do this for myself and i am willing to take the time. obviously i dont want to hurt the car. but im lost at the moment.

thank you again. watch the cheap shots again i am really new at this.

You are not seeing changes because you are probably in closed loop and the ecu will always try to find stoich. What exactly are you trying to do? Keep an eye on your fuel trims. Where are they right now?

At idle it's running right at 14.5-14.9. But I can let the car sit and idle long enough that the fans kick on. At this point it should be in open loop correct?

It will operate in closed loop as long as it stays within the perameters that it's set to. Changes to the fuel tables are evident outside of closed loop or by logging your trims. Are you just trying to get a feel for how the tables effect things, or is there something specific you're after?

Correct. Right now I wanted to see how much things will change with adjustments. I figured fuel would be the best place to test this as if I go to rich I would be looking at is fouled plugs and wasted fuel.

There's not really any need, but you can turn closed loop off in your periphery bits. Then the ecu won't add/subtract fuel to keep you at stoich.

Thanks for the tip. I assumed that if the car was at operating temp it would then be in open loop utilizing 02 feedback, what it "thinks" is MAF and IAT's etc.... good to know.

Next step will be starting at base timing. Thank you.
