Aspiring Newbie from West Coast
Hi everyone,
I am 22 from Portland, Oregon and honestly I was never into quite into cars, I think as a kid I was briefly because I had a bunch of toy cars. But as I got older I just saw cars as a way to get from A to B and could not tell apart what a Toyota or Honda was to be frank up to this year.
But something changed recently, not sure what. I have been driving a regular hand me down car (Elantra 2012) for the past 4 years and I've been getting bugged about what the next car should be by my mother since the Elantra is already almost over a decade old. I didn't quite know what car I even wanted I just know I am not a fan of bigger cars like SUVs/Trucks, I am more of a small car kind of guy. I also don't like the, too fancy like the Lambo, BMW, Ferrari, etc they're just too much I like to keep it simple. Anyhow a now ex of mine had a regular old lancer and I just thought "Lancer huh? That's a cool name for a car" so I looked it up and the Evo 7-9 popped up too and I was like "Dang this looks awesome!". So I have the answer now, get rid of my decade old car and replace it with a two decades old car (Evo IX)! I also really want to have some fun driving so that added in to why I wanted a race car.
I've been looking and thinking about it for the last 4 months and so I know I really want the Evo IX, I love the 90's aesthetics to it and it's just my type. I know the difficulties with insurance, rare parts, maintenance, etc as I've done my due diligence in reading up and learning about it and that's something I am willing to deal with. Plus I'd love to learn how to work on it and do the vast majority of my own maintenance for which thankfully I've seen many guides on here/youtube. I just have to pay off a few things by the end of this year and should have a good ~15k to put down with the rest financed by the start of next Spring. Most definitely not the smartest financial decision in life but smart does not always equal fun plus this car is getting rarer to acquire by the year, else I might have foregone the rush.
Hope to post pictures next year!

What's up @Jaiyro If you're getting into Evo's you have come to the right place. So first thing I would probably advise you to figure out is who will be working on the car? Do you like to wrench, or do you have an evo specialist near by? If not a specialist at least someone familiar with the platform. Evo's are old, complicated, and need lots of maintenance. So just from a practical standpoint you will want to have this part figured out. I would recommend you familiarize yourself with the maintenance schedule. One so you know what you are getting into, and two because when you are looking at cars you can evaluate how well they were taken care of by how well the maintenance schedule was followed. You can download the factory service manual for free from here: https://www.evoscan.com/ to get the maintenance schedule and all the info you would need to keep the car going. Welcome to the Club
Thanks for the factory service manual and that link it looks quite helpful and I made sure to bookmark it. I think I've looked around somewhere here and there was a pretty reputable evo specialist in the area but I am probably going to have a go with the wrench when it comes to the more simpler things (timing belt, fluid changes, etc) as I'd like to cut down on cost plus it seems fun and helpful to have that experience anyway . If it's something out of my league in terms of difficulty I will definitely turn it over to a specialist.
