Exaust Or Just Muffler

I'm interested in upgrading my stock exaust, if I were to just install a high flow muffler would I recive hp gains? Or do I have to get cat or axel back?

Doing anything will increase your hp. Doing more will increase it more. If you have any intentions to mod the car, I'd say go ahead and get a full exhaust, whether it's axleback or catback, and not do it in sections so to speak.

Well, not ANYTHING. Take a look at the Lancer dyno thread and you'll see that there are some people that suffered a loss of tq or a loss of hp. And poorly designed parts might not get a gain at all. As for exhaust, figure 1 hp for a muffler and about 3 max for an exhaust.

So 'just' getting a muffler will give gains right?

Cause I was thinking, using PC terms that it woudl just be a huge bottleneck. And I wouldnt get any gains at all(though Id still get the sound)

Also, what kind is best for an N/A lancer?

I personally would go with the whole exhaust as opposed to just the muffler. In the engine section of the forums you will find countless posts that agree that while a new muffler is good, a whole new catback is better

For NA applications it seems that anything 2" or larger is sufficient. Of course, you will still have the restrictive cat anyway.
