I checked today and I found one of the alternator bolt was gone! The alternator now is siting against the engine. I thought I would just fix it without going into the dealership, so I bought a bolt from dealer...

It was the bolt at the top that is missing. The hole now is not aligned with the hole on the bracket. I tried to move the alternator to align to the bracket but it was way too tight even though I loosen up the bolt on the bottom of the alternator. Could anyone shred some light on how I can move the alternator to align with the holes on the bracket? I am thinking if the belt tensioner automatically tighten it so I can't move the alternator unless I remove the pulley?

On the belt tensioner there is almost always either a 1/2" or 3/8" square hole taht you put a breaker bar in to release tension.

You just use a wrench or depending on the type of belt tension system you have the square end of the socket.

Please not that you are not trying to remove or unbolt anything. The wrench or bar is used to get a purchase and leverage on the belt tensioner.

Once you have a solid connection to the tensioner you just rotate the wrench/Bar and you can move the tensioner. I haven'tr done this on an Evo but there may be an arrow on the tensioner to show you which way to move it.

Study the routing of the belt before loosening the tensioner. You will need to pop it off a couple of pulleys one you get the tension off of it, then slowly release the wrench/ bar pressure on the tensioner, it will stop after moving a little travel.

Put the bolt back in the alt.

Pull the tensioner back again with the bar/ wrench, and reroute your belt.

Let tensioner back into position, you are done.

I ended up going out a local shop to have them install it for me. They had to take out the belt and reinstall them. I am glad that I didn't do it myself as I had no previous experience with belts and tensioners... if I screwed it up, I had to tow my car to the shop. They charged me $15 for it, very reasonable.

Bump! I have the same problem! Anyone out there with an easier solution? Is it safe to drive without the bolt holding the alternator to the support bracket?

 

all 3 or 4 or whatever of mine fell of in 60k miles. lol

 

If you loosen the tension on the belt you should be able to move the alternator into position. You want to rotate the tensioner counter-clockwise and then put something in the hole to keep it loose (you'll know what hole I'm talking about when you look at it). This is most easily done from under the car. Once you have the tension off the belt the alternator can probably be pushed into position. It if cannot you can just pull the belt off the alternator pulley until you have the alternator back in position and bolted up, then reinstall the belt. After that all you have to do is release the tensioner and everything should be fine.

take ur wheel off.. the tensioner is right there behind the plastic to the left of the crank shaft pulley you will see a squar whole you can put a 1/2 drive onto it...

I know this is an old thread but has anyone run into an issue with the top bracket that goes to your manifold not being installed? Ran for a 400hp pull and somehow my bottom bolt and bracket went tumbling out and slipped the belt off my Alt. I had to order a new M10x111mm for the bolt but I’m more concerned with the bracket.
