Question 2003 EVO or 2005 EVO?

I am in a predicament I am now looking to buy a new EVO and found a 2003 with 152 miles for $28,000. But since I came here and found out that 05's will come with AYC is it prudent for me to wait for the new 05's to come in and buy one of those. Is the AYC worth the wait, or will I not miss it if I buy the 03.

I don't know if buying a used Evo is a good idea if you don't know the hitory of the car very well.

Even though it only has 152 miles, those could be very strainuous 152 miles. You have no idea what the previous owner did to it.

Should you take the chance? That's your call.

For me, though, I don't want ACD (the availability of AYC is questionable at this moment). It's more stuff that could break, and is extremely expensive and complicated to fix. I don't need it. I won't know the difference.

That's just my take.

I second the "no ACD". If you can't drive on tarmac, dirt or snow then you don't need this car anyway. As for the 152 miles...it's still under warranty.

Just a head's up - I was reading an old copy of EVO magazine (from the UK) - to replace the AYC diff and contol unit was over $5,000.... Not something I would want to contemplate in 5 or 6 years. I think the mechanicals diffs in the stock Evo will be a prized thing down the road. I just wish Mitsu or someone else would come up with a bolt-on front LSD conversion. (I know about the ones guys here have done - I mean from Quaife or someone like that)

Good luck either way. Evos are hard to beat.

03' Evo = $28,000.....will be very happy
05' Evo = $Jacked Up.....because of ACD, which you probably wouldn't even need...

Used Evo is good enough. That's what I'm gonna buy sometime this year.

another thought - buy an '04

A used car for 4% under MSRP is not a good deal. I suggest you shop for a new '04 and here's why:

1) As others have said the improvements for '05 may not be terribly important in the real world (do you really need another 15HP? do you plan to do a lot of driving on gravel or high performance driving in snow?)
2) The prices of '05s may be higher and there may be more demand therefore more liklihood of dealers jacking prices
3) 2004s that are still on the lot are difficult to sell. Dealers will make a deal. I got my new RS for $500 under MSRP - total OTD price including tax and tags was $27,516
4) Mitsubishi has a great deal that not many people on the list are talking about. All new Mitsubishis purchased between July and August 2004 from dealer stock get FREE routine maintenance for 3 years or 45,0000 miles. And this applies to the Evo. I just bought an RS and the dealer knew nothing about this but I had the service dept check on their computer and my VIN is included in the free service deal. So that's 9 services at probably $150 per service - that $1350 saved

So, if you buy an '04 now you can probably save $1500 - $3000 over waiting for an '05

Regards,
Alan

You will get a good deal buying a used evo. save you about 20-30%. I've got ACD & always leave it on "tarmac". I hardly use the other options as it is useless for me. I dont race & therefore dont even come close to its limits. I try using the "gravel" option when its raining but dont really feel any difference since im not driving too fast. So unless you race the car or drive it to its limit, you wouldnt feel any difference. The "snow" option is a waste since it NEVER snows here...

my '05 mr will be in the middle of september, you may want to wait since they are coming in sooner this year especially since they all will have a helical limited slip differential and ACD(if you can utilize the snow option) plus aluminum door side impact bars to decrease the weight. AYC is not going to be an option on the '05 models maybe in '06.

Damn, then those are all test drive miles. I hopped in my EVO w/ 10 miles on it when I test drove it off the showroom floor. The test drive was 6 miles.

I would definitely talk the price down to 24k for that car. It's an 03 and has probably been treated like a cheap hooker.

The 05s are appealing to me because of the front LSD. I could care less about the ACD though.

I agree. Thats way too much for a leftover 2003. I just bought my 2003 this week for around $24.8K. It had 40 miles on it (although 22 of those were put on during our test drive). Had the sunroof and low profile wing. Plus it had a bunch of dealer installed items (CD changer, alarm, VIN etching, rear strut bar, etc) included.

Based on another thread I was looking at, $25K seems to be the most to spend on a new 2003.

Didn't know you could get a discount from MSRP for a new '04 RS. I have been eyeing a white one that I think is still on the dealer's showroom floor (2nd RS they got, first one sold fast). They have like a $5000 mark-up on the window sticker. I know I can negotiate most, if not all of that away, but would love to get a discount. $26,500 plus tax/license (which adds about 9% in Los Angeles) is a sweet deal for a car this fast.

05 Evo

I would buy a new Evo, either a left over 03 or new 04 because you never know what is going to happen with Mitsubishi.
They are still in trouble as a company and they might not live to 2005. Just have to keep on it with the survival of Mitsu.
