Evo 8, STi, SRT-4
Evo 8, STi, SRT-4
Hey, I am new to the forums, and I am considering getting one of the three above. Can anyone please tell me the pros and cons of the Evo 8 over the other 2? I know alot about the SRT-4, and I am just trying to find out which one is best for me. Thanks.
the srt-4 is front wheel drive.. the evo is 4... the evo handles a million times better.. uhm.. it's a lot better car than the srt-4 and i would take one in a heart beat. the sti is faster in straight line than the evo but handling is not as crisp. only reason you might choose sti over evo is for looks.. which is your opinion.
I have heard things about bad clutches and trannys on the Evo and STi....looks wise I think they are comparable.....any other differences in comfort, and how expensive is it to the get Evo in the mid 11s or so range?
sti is a bit more comfy than the evo. it has bigger seats and softer suspension. evo is about 3 grand less than a sti and it is more mod friendly...both are great cars and you can't go wrong with either one. and don't even mention about that pos dodge.
I would choose an Evo anyday between the three.....
i drove all three cars and the Evo takes the cake.....
Evo handles A LOT better than the Sti, and even at shifting, Sti doesnt have the crisp shifting like the Evo...
Truthfully, i feel that the Evo and Sti's powerband is almost equal....not much of a difference....

yeah I'll prob go look at the STi and Evo this weekend. I might go with teh EVO though cause....rumors have it that since the EVo was released early....subaru released their STi ahead of scheduale since mitsubishi did and wasnt actually quite ready too, and apparently the STi has some probs that they never fixed. I know for sure that the WRX has a weak tranny it might have carried over in the STi

the power band, AWD launches excluded, are similar between the srt-4 and the evo.
the srt is a fun little car, i don't think you should prejudice yourself against it. it's got great seats--i'd love to have a set in my evo... the engine is, if anything, overbuilt, and i'd never worry about it. it could *of course* stand to get some suspension upgrades, but it's light (compared to the sti and evo) and neons are fairly good autox cars.
the sti's a better daily driver car than the evo, despite it's worse gas mileage. (though it's a very minor margin, especially when you consider the .5 litre displacement and 29 hp advantage).
the evo's got an awesome lineage, the engine is tried and true many times over, the handling is phenomenal, and it's got great power. remember: power is easy to make, handling is not.

i dont know about that, I didnt feel that way when I put my *** on one and my 3 kids in the rear seat!
For now I would just stay away from the 2.5L engine.
SRT = great car for the price. cant match evos performance but, at 7 to 9K$$ less...........

In NE Ohio, we hold a monthly meet with WRXs and SRTs (among other guest cars). It includes dinner and all types of driving.
The SRT, with some additional Mopar parts, can easily keep up with the rest of us on the highway. In the twisties, however, 4WD does have its advantage. The SRT usually gets farther and farther behind. Nevertheless, it's a lot of car for the price.
The STi may be faster overall. In the hands of us amateur drivers who are incapable of extracting maximum performance, the stock Evo seems like it needs to be worked hard to keep up with a stock STi. I have some minimal intake and exhaust mods, and can only keep side-by-side with a stock STi. I suppose the extra displacement, low-end torque, and horsepower output do make a difference.
The WRX may have a weak tranny, but the Evo has an even weaker clutch. After 10 or so launches, expect to buy a new one. The synchro on the Evo gearbox isn't that much better either. They may grind as easily as those on the STi. On the other hand, the Evo's engine is easily accessible, and it doesn't knock like some STi's do.
Finally, the interior is a personal preference. The plastic looks more luxurious on the STi, so are the guages (made by Defi?). But the seats suck compare to the Recaros. Also, if you're frequently transporting passengers, the Evo is much roomier.
Hope this is useful information to you.

You could launch SRT4 and not worry. 2.5 liter engine isn't bad for a small car.
Back seats suck on STI and SRT4. The Track width is wider on eVo than any other cars in that segment.
eVo handles much better than STI, handles infinitely better than SRT4.
STI would have more fun though, since they have that torque distributing thing like the AYC/ACD, I assume.
But most importantly, eVo sits you lower, gear box is superb compared to STI & SRT4. That's the reason I bought eVo, cause the gear box is better than any of the cars I've drove.
And it looks good.

wildcat-
srt4 is a whole other price bracket, if you're cross-shopping this one the arguments are too varied and broad.
the wrx tranny was not carried over to sti.
sti 6spd tranny is very tough
05 sti's if i am not mistaken come with the 'sti' brand short shift linkage whereas 04's did not. in addition kartboy makes an even shorter shift lever which reduces throws an additional 10% of ss kit. 40% over std. couple that with $30 shifter bushings = one nice feeling gearbox. (sucks we have to mod it to get that feel tho)
the power difference in the 2 is not as big as it seems, just feels different.
the sti's power almost feels like that of a supercharger, in that the torque curve is fairly broad and the power is available down low, whereas the evo gives you more of a big kick in the pants when the turbo kicks in.
evo engine is currently more mod friendly than subaru's 2.5l block, so what is once an advantage, quickly disappears with less money and less headaches.
subaru geared the sti so that it is easy to keep in the powerband, unfortunately it seems to have decreased it's potential in areas that subaru did not design it for anyway but are considered yardsticks for performance on the streets.
notably, 0-60 magazine racers and the 1/4 mile.
0-60 requires a 2-3 upshift in sti, not so in evo.
1/4 mile requires shift to 5th gear, not sure about evo.
interior is of course different, but in a way if you are going to mod your car then maybe the simplicity of the evo is for you. there seems to be much less going on, so when you toss in gauges, some i.c.e. and whatever else you desire the once 'cheaper' look is now pretty pimp!
i will probably still like my sti interior better once my red on red defi's get released, but don't let all the talk of cheap evo interior steer you away.
handling- evo owns stock for stock.
steering is quicker, more precise and all-around doggie-style spanked on the @$$ better than the sti's.
my whiteline steering rack bushings have made me a bit happier, and an aftermarket smaller steering wheel will help too, but i will have lost airbags and have spent more money again!
if you are serious about performance, owning an sti will have you trying springs first and then eventually going to coilovers.
if you are used to driving a hyundai, then you will be like 95% of the world and realize that both cars handling is unmatched in this price class. but when compared directly, the evo is superman while the sti is batman.
fwiw, i have noticed that it seems the evo's front wheels are much closer to the nose of the car, ala bmw, whereas the sti seems to have a slightly longer nose, placing the engine what seems to be more forward overall. i wonder how much of this is attributed to the evo's handling? i know it makes the bmw have near ideal wieght distribution.
in the looks department, i like both. i personally like a tricked evo more than an sti.
evo has a sloped down nose appearance which makes it seem more aggressive, whereas the suspension geometry of the sti always makes it seem like the nose is slightly higher or at least equal with the rear.
wings, the cf center of the evo wing def hotter imho than the sti.
jeeeeez, before i go on any further, it kinda makes you wonder why i have an sti doesn't it?
as for shortcomings in terms of quality, and strength of the companies backing the vehicle i cannot speak for mitsu owners as to what areas of the evo are problematic and will not banter on about rumors or what i heard in forums. i'll let you hear that from evo owners directly as to what to look out for.
if i could have the perfect car:
sti 6spd tranny
gearing like the evo
tunability of the evo
factory backed perf packages like srt-4
sti gauges
evo seats in sti colors
sunroof option like evo
boxer style exhaust note of sti
8k redline like our jdm brethren
twin scroll turbo like evo and jdm sti
steering&handling of evo
****, you could wrap all that in any mfg. label and even if it were ugly i'd buy it for 40k
hope you guys don't mind a scooby owner chiming in here?
thanks for listening

i'm a scooby owner too =). the seats for the evo kicks ***. w/o stats, both evo and sti are fun, just depends on yourself that's all. that's the only real way to answer that question. good luck bro =)
I agree with some of the comments above, if you're really looking at an SRT-4, you're in a totally different price bracket than the Evo or STI....you should be comparing the Neon with RSX Type S, Celica GTS, Mazda 6s, etc.
The SRT-4 is a throw away car....quick, good speed, power for your dollar, but you drive it for a few years and then throw it away and pick up a new one.
When I was deciding on cars I looked at both the STI and the Evo. I liked the extra power, extra gear, and nicer interior of the STI. But when it came down to it, I never was crazy about the WRX look and the STI while somewhat better looking, I really liked the exterior look of the Evo. The fact that it was slightly cheaper and the comparable stats didn't hurt either.
From a straight line, an STI is faster, I experienced it first hand when I was stock and I raced against a stock STI. I would keep up with him until he shifted into 6th and he would start to pull. When I had the advans on though, I definitely think I had a slight advantage.
I think between the two like many people said, it's personal preference. You could always wait a little while until the Evo MR gets released...even though the 2005 Evos only add a handful more HP....if only we got the MR-FQs out here...
