Active center differential

I am interested in what people know about the active center differential that will be on the 05 RS & MR. Has anyone read any reviews or has personally driven an Evo with one?

There has never been an active center differential on any Audi Quattro.

Quattro I used a lockable center diff and lockable rear diff.

Current Quattro's use a torsen center diff and the ABS pump to act as axle differentials.

You are incorrect. Audi uses the haldex coupling, while not quite the same as Mitsi ACD(nothing is), but it is active.

There is a LOT of information about the ACD available on this forum and on the mitsu site. ACD has been available on JDM Evolutions for several generations now.

That system was developed by VW and is active in the sense that most of the time the car is FWD and when there is a speed differential between axles, the power will jump to the other one. Very odd system to drive during low mu conditions, but it works, I guess.

The active diff in the MR doesn't share any technology with the Haldex in the TT/R32/Euro Bora 4Motion, so I don't see where you're coming from.

I guess you could call it "active", but it's really just a poor substitute for Torsen.

Haldex was developed in Norway, in a dudes garage, along time ago. VW/Audi group bought it, cuz theirs sucked ***.

Correct(kinda, they are not the same but damn close), The fact that they accomplish the same function with different means does not make the Haldex "passive". In most cars it's very simple, however it can be programmed to be just as effective as Mitsu system. But audi/vw have stupid fat cars, so it's a moot point to have active diff on a heavy and slow car anyway.

Who said anything about torsen?

2nd post in this thread mentioned quattro and like you said, Audi didn't develop Haldex, so it's not quattro, IMO. And I don't know how to say "four" in Norwegian, or that's what I would call it.

As for quattro "sucking ***", it's a very rugged system, you rarely see a torsen differential in an Audi application fail. Unfortunately, they went from making a great rally car that's sporty in nature to making huge luxury cars that you can drive at high speeds in and not wake the wife up.

Well first off, go to the drivetrain sub-forum and search for 'ACD'. That'll give you 4 pages of hits.

Then go to google and search for something like "evo acd ayc". You'll get a lot of hits like this:

http://www.myevo.com/E7_01.htm

Next, read the shop manuals:

http://www.lancer-evo.net/php/manuals.php

I suppose the next step from there is to find one and take it apart

Threads on this forum rarely have correct info, especially in the ACD related topics, and the engine topics, and so on and so on....

I have all the factory manuals, homologation papers, and two evo 7rs's siting in my shop, I have had the t-cases open and serviced them. What I'm trying to see is how much is known in the US about the system, from what I can see there are a lot of missconceptions about the system and how it works. I just want to assemble a page with correct info. But if there is already a one stop source of CORRECT info I won't waste my time.

Oops, my bad. I thought you were the original poster who was just trying to get some info about ACD and hear from somebody who as driven a non-us spec evo8.

So poster guy (tursup) ^^^ there was your answer.

Oh and in terms of accurate information, I'm under the impression that mitsu is keeping pretty tighted lipped about exactly what they plan to implement in the US ACD.
