Oh Come on

Why would they do this? I understand the Electric Car Fad. But the EVO is a Super Sport Sedan. Super Sport Sedan + Electric = Terrible
TERRIBLE

thats not completely true. have you seen the tesla roadster? it will smoke a ferrari on the quarter mile.

and electric cars are not exactly a fad, because they might very well be the primary replacement for the internal combustion engine.

The tesla roadster is amazing, 4sec 0-60 and 100% torque from 0 to 13k rpm. Imagine that in autox.
Tesla will make a sedan version in the next few years, which will certainly rival the MIEV EVO.

in performance, most def. but the price tags should be in different worlds

If Tesla's price tag stays where it is now then yes, but you never know how the MIEV tag will change with the new electric motors anyway. Maybe none of us will be able to afford it then anyway

Sounds cool, but how reliable will this be? Also if it breaks who is going to fix this "space-age" stuff....

Ok, this thread has way too much bull****. I am usually a lurker but I am going to chime in...

First off, the torque curve on these cars is not a rectangle. It probably looks something like this:

Also, electric motors are not exactly "space age". The electric motor pre-dates the ICE. Electric motors have far fewer moving parts and do not require friction surfaces as piston motors do. This allows them to have a much higher MTBF. An electric motor does not require air filters, spark plugs, or oil changes. It also does not have to idle (the reason gasoline motors must idle when the vehicle is stopped is because combustion engines generally produce 0 torque at 0 rpm). Due to it's lesser complexity, the drive system should be easier to fix. Batteries may be a different story from a reliability standpoint.

Last, while having max torque at 0 RPM is very desirable in producing good performance and handling, I doubt this car will handle as well as a normal evo. Like all electric motors, wheel motors are heavy and it is all unsprung weight. How well would YOUR evo handle if it's wheels weighed 120+ lbs?

What part makes it terrible? The instant response and torque, the superior weight distribution, or the added performance?

Whether people like it or not, I would guess that in 25-30 years or so the combustion engine in most cars will be history simply due to a fact that oil supply is limited and will get more expensive due to booming demand in China and India (rapidly developing countries). Countries such as Sweden already declared that by 2020 they want to be as oil independent as possible, I think more countries including the US will follow the suit.

Anyway, MIEV is a great concept, although a bit heavy and the unsprung weight at the wheels still needs a lot more R&D, it just shows that companies are seriously thinking of alternate forms of energy to power vehicles. There is electricity, there is hydrogen, next thing you know there will be oxygen.
