This could be fairly wicked for racing applications is there was still total control over gear changes or downshifting rather.

Zeroshift is old news... new news would be if they managed to produce an actual car with the transmission, which they haven't managed to do in 4 years. Every video of the demonstration Mustang shows it shifting VERY gingerly, so my bet is those pucks don't hold up very well. I'd bet it's vaporware.

The graph from one of the links was meant only to demonstate the smooth gear transitions - granted - but you'd think they could have simulated a faster car or slightly more spirited acceleration. 0 to ~55 mph in 16 seconds - whoa

That quick transition without any power drop is what the DSG is about. If you go to VW web site and build a GTI they give you 0-60 mph times of both the DSG and MT. They claim 0.5 sec quicker with DSG. Supposedly, this system is quicker. However, I'm not conviced that the DSG is best for road racing, where you want ultimate control over your revs and gearing. My A3 shows a lag in these situations sometimes that could be avoided with MT. Now whether this system will have that same lag, we'll have to wait and see.

the evo 10 will not have this, currently no OEM cars are equipped with this zero shift trans, but the DSG (that the evo is rumored to have) is already present in the jettas and people seem to be pleased with it

There's definitely one car that has it already or something very close to it because I've seen the commercial (New Maxima?) where a guy is in his car and his girl is putting on lipstick, he makes the shifting noise so she knows when she can put it on.

There are a couple major problems with the zeroshift transmission. You are not able to perform power downshifts or coast upshifts. In addition it has a very complicated system to block engagement and prevent chipping. Zeroshift also has only applied for a patent in the US and some of the claims they made will not hold up. The transmissions zeroshift has in its TVR and Mustang are "air shifted" and are actually quite smooth. I believe however they had clutch modulation to reduce driveline shock. They applied for a patent on the clutch modulation topic as well. The zeroshift idea is really sweet and I give them credit, but right now I only see its future in drag racing if that. Then at amount this trans will cost, why not get a stronger, much simpler(less expensive) dog box.

Maxima has a cvt. I want to say it is a toroidal cvt, but I could be wrong. I know Nissan has toroidals in a couple vehicles.

Just a heads up from someone in the business.

The commercial in question is advertising a CVT, not zero shift. I believe the car maker in question is Dodge.
